Lieberman kicks on tickin'

Interesting string at Doug Clark's place on Joe Lieberman's defeat.

I, for one, don't have any problem with Leiberman running as an independent. It's legal. It's his right.

If the people truly don't want him, he'll lose again.

Your prior topic "Terror Averted" is more the reason we need the Senator Joes to remain in office. Sen Lieberman, in a bipartisan effort, realizes that this type of war will span decades of conflict and instead of fighting the war among ourselves, believes it should be taken to the enemy.

Run Joe, run.

And that enemy was Iraq?

Jon said:

Yes, and don't forget about our ongoing campaign in Afghanistan, and eventually, regime changes will need to be made in Iran & Syria.

Who should we invade after that? France?

No, North Korea. Or else starve them all to death. Kim Jong Il might just eat the carcasses of his own dying people, though. Then, he'd blow up Japan for fun.

I am an old CT Yankee, and I spoke with my parents about the Liberman business. They say many Independents switched to Democrat just to vote against him in the primary. But the lines between Dem and Indy, and between Repub moderate and Indy are very close in CT. I was raised to think my own voice at a town hall meeting was just as strong, just as influential, as my neighbors, as long as I had an honest reputation and could reason things out to convince others.

Lieberman blew it by being aloof until the last couple weeks. He also has been found in the back pockets of an awful lot of lobbyist's patrons, aka, the Corporate Bloodsuckers.

And we reserved New Englanders don't go in for that kissy stuff!

Was the enemy Iraq? That's a valid question. To an extent this administration and the last thought so based on intelligence estimates. Therein lies the problem, and it is a non-partisan one. We don't understand the world around us, either from the standpoint of our educational system, our intelligence services, or our military planning.

We were very engaged in the world at the end of the Second World War and throughout the Cold War, then withdrew from it in all but an economic sense, when the Berlin Wall came down.

We have spent the last three decades raising a generation of scholars on a world view based on what happened in Vietnam instead of what was actually happening in current events. Our military spent much of the last 15 years buying weapons systems based on the concept of winning wars without infantry soldiers on the ground. Our intelligence services believed they could make informed assessments without human assets and didn't bother to even have enough linguists to read the data they were gathering.

All of which is to say that we should not be surprised that Iraq happened, or that we are slow to adapt to the rise of terrorist operators with hard (and sometimes not so hard) to calculate ties to various regimes. What we have to do now is reform our institutions and reengage around the world, unfortunately probably militarily in some cases. It isn't about politics, it's about structural deficits. If we get bogged down in the sideshows we'll miss the development of the next 9/11.

A Rasmussen report poll on 8/10 has Lieberman leading Lamont 46 to 41% with the other guy getting 6%. 65% of all CT voters view Lieberman in a favorable light.

It appears that ex-Dem Senator Lieberman is now the favorite to win the race come November. Apparently not enough indies are going into Lamont's camp.
