Slow-pitch softball

Katie Couric's lead-story interviews with Secetary of State Condoleezza Rice were curiously soft and unelightening on "Sixty Minutes" Sunday night. Not one shred of new information came to light.

The interivew seemed more intended to showcase the new anchor of "The CBS Evening News" than to make any revelations about Rice. What a waste.

Allen, you stating that Katie Couric coddled (slo- pitched)somebody in power instead of doing real journalism is like Babe Ruth teasing a young kid that he hits a pretty good long ball.

Surely you are being coy.

Jon said:

Possibly the reason no new information came to light was because it's probably already out there.

Katie could ask her all types of questions regarding Iraq and the war on terrorism and we already know the admins stance on that so no new information was gonna be forthcoming from Condi on that issue.

On the personal level, we already knew that she likes to play the piano, she's the Armani type, wants to be a sports commissioner after saving the world from terrorism, had very loving parents, overcame an adverse social environment to eventually become the Chancellor of a major University, that she's the first Black female to become Secretary of State (appointed by a Republican President at that), etc.

Now if you meant revealing personal information other than the above, well she probably just wants to keep that personal and that's understandable.

Jon said:

All that rambling and I forgot to include this.

Yeah, getting a high profile guest like the Secretary of State should bolster your ratings and in doing so showcase the new talent at CBS. Katie's ratings of late haven't been to good, I believe she's at the bottom.

Stormy said:

You think that CBS is starting to rethink the decision to put a lightweight, face for television personality in a major news role on their network? Couric has the visual appeal, no doubt, but can she do the heavy lifting needed to float CBS's sagging ratings? It was telling that they required her to lose 20 lbs. before she took to the air. It was all about selling the sizzle than the meat.

Buckmtn said:

Stormy, not to worry; if this CBS gig doesn't work out for Katie her "sizzle without the meat" style would be right at home at the N&R.

Allen, the last time you did anything remotely confrontational was when you stumbled out of the Carosel theatre about a year ago, mumbled something about Skip Alston right after he was ousted from the NAACP presidency, went back in to watch the next movie, and that's the last we saw of you except for Snakes on a Plane and the Doggie shelter.

In the meantime the schools are an out of control runaway train, being run by obvious imbeciles, the county gov't is a mess because it's hopelessly divided and apparently has to be because if the currently operational theory that the black man is getting contiuously screwed is scrapped, the black leaders on the board are afraid they will actually have to govern on relevant issues and then they feel they are really in trouble.

It's not like you don't have anything to write about.

It's a big problem when your community newspaper essentially decides to pass on it's role as any kind of watchdog for the community, people come out of the woodwork-often times crazed, half-cocked, reactionary people, like moi, who don't really know what the hell they are talking about, but are mad as hell and aren't going to shutup anymore as they try to do the job you should be doing.

Allen Johnson said:

I respect your passion. But you'd probably be more effective at it if you'd acknowledge that the universe doesn't revolve around one issue in north High Point, Mr. Savage, sir.

Skeet Club Savage said:

I think most people would agree, sir, the problem that surfaced in NHP is an extremely relevant bellweather for a myriad of problems that exist in this county. Political bullying, race, hypocrisy by the people in power, and need to hang somebody on the cross etc. etc. to name just a few.

Jon said:

SCS,

Your passion for NHP and the affairs of our county are commendable and I as well as you and a cast of thousands can and will make a difference by casting our votes in November on the bond issues as well as for or against those who govern in our county.

Now back to the original topic, SCS, I, as well as probably others are interested in what you thought of the interview the other night of Condi Rice?

Surely you have thoughts related to issues other than are local.

But Katie's so cute! And such nice legs. Even with the ending of the technological diet, she's by far the cutest anchor of the major networks.

Allen, you and John are lucky you're in print, or you'd be out of a job, even with your musical mustaches.

Allen Johnson said:

Yeah, but I've got nicer legs than JR.

Allen Johnson said:

As for Katie's piece, it was not up to "60 Minutes" standards. I'm reading a biography of Rice now; Couric's interview told me much, much less than it does.
I agree with Jon. This seems to have been calculated more for its promotional value.
"60 Minutes" has done far better stories on movie stars and singers.

Allen, I gotta question your perspicuity in matters of media analysis. Lately, you have observed that:

(1) NPR is a nondiverse station for white people
(2) Reality TV uses shock tactics
(3) Katie Couric gives softball interviews

What's next, a complaint that the wrestling on TV isn't real? That advertising uses cheap emotional appeals?

jaycee said:

Allen, what's your real point?
Are you mad that the liberal Couric didn't attack the conservative Dr. Rice and try to rip her to shreds? Is journalism only good when it's the liberals pursuing their political agenda against the Bush administration?
Apparently you missed about 8 years of molly-coddling by the gushingly admiring press corps during the Clinton reign.

Allen Johnson said:

No, but I expected a tougher interview (Dr. Rice can handle herself just fine in such a setting) and I hoped to learn something new. "60 Minutes" usually is very good at revealing new and interesting things about familiar faces.

jaycee said:

No offense, but since this has probably been the most cussed and discussed administration in history I doubt there's much new to reveal, either about Dr. Rice or her policies.
Personally, I admire the woman. The accomplishments of her life are matched by few others in our time.

Allen Johnson said:

I admire her as well; I heard her speak when she was in the elder Bush's administration. She was very impressive. That's why I'm so disappointed in the interview.
