'The Wire' goes to school

I know HBO series aren't everyone's cup of tea but "The Wire" is one of the grittiest and most compelling hours on TV.

The Baltimore-based cop show features such fully realized, three-dimensional characters that you know the cops, the politicians and the drug lords equally well. And you are surprised at times where your empathy takes you.

What makes this year's episodes even more intriguing is a story arc that follows an ex-cop into the classroom as a teacher in an inner-city middle school.

The show tackles a number of issues that we're wrestling with even here in Guilford County without being preachy or overly moralistic.

This show can be violent at times. The language is graphic. But the lessons are real.

Allen,

I have not seen "The Wire," but my brother Brice is a big fan.

Kris Britton used to be a School Resource Officer at Southwest Guilford Middle School, where I teach.

I believe she was assigned to at least one other school before she began working at Southwest.

She is no longer a police officer; she now teaches at Dudley High School and also coaches the girls' basketball team. (I'm pretty sure she's still there.)

I have not seen "Officer Britton" since she began teaching, so I don't know what her experiences have been like.

I do know that our school was briefly fortunate to have her as our SRO.

I also was told by others that she was a great facilitator with small groups of students concerning issues such as diversity. (Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to be a first-hand witness.)

Your post just reminded me that our local school system has at least one cop-turned-teacher.

Hope you're doing well, Allen.

Despite my disappearance from the regular dialogue, I still try to keep up with the editorial pages and local news as much as possible, and I love many of the new things that you and the News & Record have done to increase local involvement in the editorial pages.

Thank you for what you do.

Sincerely,

Hardy

Great to hear from you, Hardy. We miss you on the blogosphere.

The Wire was inspired by the HBO miniseries "The Corner" which was based on true events. That was one of the best and most moving series I have ever seen.

Allen Johnson said:

So, Sam, do you watch "The Wire"?

Samuel Spagnola said:

I watched the first season. I've been intrigued by some of the bits I've been able to catch this season, and I keep saying I'm going to catch up with HBO on demand, but thus far I haven't been able to. How's that for a run on sentence?
