Battle-scarred "Galactica"
Obviously, I can go only a few days without some reference to the sci-fi groundbreaker, "Battlestar Galactica," which is getting edgier by the minute.
When I ran into several kindred "Galactica" devotees at ConvergeSouth over the weekend, we all agreed that a galaxy far, far away seems suspiciously close to Iraq.
The new season's themes include an enemy occupation, torture, detainees, executions, an insurgency and suicide bombings -- by the series' presumed "good guys," the human beings, no less.
One of the bad-guy Cylons quips to one of his comrades about the violently defiant humans: "What did you expect, for them to greet us with ... oh, never mind."

I find it to be a bit short to view it as Iraq in space; the tactics used by the Cylon skin jobs are more Gestapo/SS, and the only Iraq like think is the suicide bombings by the Insurgents; which is the weakest link in the whole thing, if you ask me.
With humanity on a razor's edge of obliteration, you'd think they would do all they could to avoid getting killed.
The SJCs are so Nazi like, especially Stockton's character; I don't think the Iraq side of the debate has our occupying force in Iraq being that way.
Then again, since they see that the Cylon's are really treating them as breeding stock, then its suicide relevant if they can't get off the rock.

I have not seen the show, but wouldn't the SJC's being so Nazi SS like be the whole point?
Most of our troops in Iraq are a cut above the mean in the GSO police department, but through an average Iraqi's eyes, our "occupying force" might just look a bit more SS like than we would like to imagine.

...we are not practicing genocide; running around with Einsatztruppen, or establishing Lebenstraum.
Yes, an occupier is an occupier, but not all occupiers are the same.

It is to be noted that the producers of Glactica lifted a line right from a World War II Gestapo kills the good guys movie; The Great Escape; the line was. "let them stretch their legs", and then when the prisoners got out, they gunned them down.
Hitler's personal order....

...btw, I could talk hours about BSG - Moore (the producer) is doing some great stuff.
I think he did borrow both Nazi occupation themes (watch Col Tights wife get her hair shaved for being a collaborator) and the police force working with the SJCs not only speak towards Iraqi security forces, but all collaborationist police forces in history, including the Vichy and the Dutch SS, as well as Palestinian's working with Israel.
What they are doing is telling human history and drama, suffering, and hate, love an vengeance, in a Sci-Fi serial...not to mention that Glen Larson and Moore seem to see this series as a possible Pre History of human civilization.
I can't get enough BSG!
I am a geek....

Bill, you're right. It's a brilliant series. And you're rught about the World War II references.
But there are stronger allusions to Iraq and the War on Terror, as I see it (sleeper agents, suspected Cylons, etc.)

...I agree ... I just don't think it is all Iraq - Larson and Moore's vision is to potray humanity, especially its ugly side...and the War in Iraq is good fodder for that, but it is, unfortunately, just another chapter in our mistreatment of each other.
Another parrallel in BSG to IRAQ is that the Cylons have no idea what they are doing in this occupation, and everything they try, good or bad, is wrong, for, like our Gov't, they just don't get one simple fact, NO ONE likes a foreign invader telling them what to do; no matter how bad the local leadership might be, it is their leadership.
I also see another parralell in this show, and I borrow it, kind of, from Chasing Ghosts...the Red Dawn Factor....

BSG Executive Producer Ron Moore says, "It (Iraq) was definitely in my mind. There were a lot of situations and occupations that we talked about in the writers’ room, Vichy France and Vietnam. You know, Iraq is happening right now, so it’s hard not to have overtones of it. The trick for us was not to make it a polemic, to not say, ‘We know what’s wrong with the Iraq situation, here are the answers.’
“It was more about, why is it such a complicated mess? Certain things just have no easy answers, just have no good ways out for anybody involved. This is one of those situations.
“We were aware of the parallels and wanted to play it as truthfully as we could, given the situation. But the same time, we’re always a little more interested in watching how our characters respond to a situation, more than we are in delineating a certain political idea about this situation.”
You can read more about Moore's thinking (but beware of BSG semi-spoilers) in his interview with the Chicago Tribune's Maureen "The Watcher" Ryan (http://featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com/entertainment_tv/2006/10/battlestar_gala.html
