So it took an expose by The Rhino Times to push the City leaders into action?
Too bad the N&R didn't undertake insightful reporting that portrayed both sides instead of going all out to support only the City's position. Then we might have had some City response in a more timely manner.
It's a shame we need two newspapers in this town to get all the facts.

From the N&R, 10/6/06:

"Another myth among some in the community is that Wray was fired, Johnson said.

"Chief Wray was not fired," Johnson said. "Wray quit.""

Mitch Johnson, did you forget that you locked the man out of his office? If the Mayor had pulled off the same stunt with your office door, would you think that you still had a job?

John Appel said:

It's common practice in police agencies for officers to the offered the chance to resign rather than face departmental discipline that will likely result in their termination.
"Quit" is sometimes a synonym for "forced to resign."

Allen Johnson said:

You've got a point. On the other hand, Wray could have stayed and answered the manager's concern about the "black book" in the trunk.

If he felt so strongly that he was on higher ground, in terms of principle, he could have stood up to Johnson.

Then he could have resigned.

I think the Rhino's mast says "All the rumors fit to print." RUMORS.

I see an article this morning about the Police Dept. investigating "leaks" that led to information being published in the Rhino Times. They plan to scour the department for "leakers" so they can be punished.
Too bad they weren't so conscientious about the "leaked" report obtained by the N&R a few months back. Who was that "leaker" and why wasn't he pursued?
Maybe the Police Dept. isn't interested because the N&R is doing it's bidding and presenting the GPD version of events ONLY.
As I said, it's a shame we need two newspapers in this town to get all the facts.
