Debbie Maines interviewed
The District 2 school board race, which encompasses North High Point, appears to feature two solid candidates.
We interviewed Guilford County Council of PTAs President Debbie Maines this week and were impressed with her energy, commitment and candor.
She shares many of the views held by her opponent, Garth Hebert.
Both have three children in the Guilford Schools.
Both favor tough-minded disciplinary policies.
Both strongly support neighborhood schools and both opposed the High Point Choice Plan.
Like Hebert, Maines believes children can and should be able to learn in any school, given good teachers and the right approaches.
She says now is an ideal time for her to serve on the school board, given her status as a stay-at-home mom and her deep involvement in the schools.
The choice for voters likely will not be based as much on issues as which candidate is the best choice to take these issues to the school board.

I like Debbie. Don't get me wrong. I've met her and I appreciate her will to help our strugglig system....BUT....we have enough good-intentioned moms on the board now.
We need board members that can bring a business approach to our system. It's time our schools be ran like a fiscally responsible business--that teaches our kids.
Right now it's a train wreck failing our kids.
I mean no disrespect whatsoever when I say that Garth is the better candidate and our board is desperate for some brains.
I'm voting for Garth for Dist. 2.

Allen,
I agree that voters need to focus upon which candidate is better qualified for the board. It would be worthwhile for voters to learn what abilties each has to bring into play if they were a member of the board. You mentioned energy, commitment and candor was demonstrated by Debbie Maines, but I believe that those qualities are also recognizable in Garth Hebert in ample quantities.
So, as a voter, what I would like to know is what are the abilities, skills, and proven competencies that each could bring to the table, if elected. I want to know what they can actually accomplish, if elected. They both are on the right side of the issues, but which of them is best suited-up to actually attack the issues and bring positive change to this dysfunctional group? I give Debbie Maines credit for wanting the best things on the board, but will she actually be able to achieve them? Will Garth Hebert be able to achieve them?

And which one will be able to sit beside Deena and Grier and NOT throw up every month?

Obviously district 2 will be better off with either of these two.
Stormy's comments strike a bell with me. He makes sense and the conclusion that I have is that Garth will be the best bet for District 2 and the County.

I heard that Grier has asked Garth to look over budgets and things already. Does anybody think he asked Debbie to do that? I mean, no offense Debs, but its not the same as balancing a checkbook.
The entire county needs Garth on the school board!!

Okay, Garth (and others), here's the deal:
This is a democratic process. Part of that process is holding Political Forums so that each candidate gets a chance to state their opinions in their own words, so that members of the community that may only see political signs on the side of the road can meet the REAL PEOPLE behind the name and get a sense of each candidate's energy and intentions.
So Garth Hebert, where were you tonight?
In the last elections, myself and my kids were campaigning for you, and we showed up with Garth signs at the polls. But I wonder why in the world you did not show up for tonight's forum? Some people shared with me that you said that you felt it was an "hostile environment" and you did not want to show up for that. So if you are elected as a Board member, how often will there be a hostile environment, and will you just stay at home and not come to community meetings?
So the little stay-at-home Mom is up for the hostile environment, but the big, professional CPA businessman is too intimidated by the "hostile environment" and stayed home?
Garth, I know and love you, but this was a mistake. It is disrespectful of the process to not show up to a forum that was put together for the benefit of showcasing the opinions of each candidate...(YOU!) Good, bad or otherwise... you should have had the balls to show up and share your thoughts.
Go ahead and tell me off and cuss me out publicly. I am a stay at home Mom, PTA Mom too, and I can take it.
Garth and friends... why did you snub the forum???

Debbie is not a stay at home mom she has a part time job.her husband comes to the school rebury to tend to their daughter. if she doesn't have time for her daughter during the day now what makes me believe she will have time for my children.
