If you need to catch up ...

As you can tell, we are in full-blown endorsement mode, with three county commissioners races on tap for today.

If you've missed any of the previous endorsements, including Sunday's on the 11 proposed city bonds, you can review them here.

The endorsements follow extensive interviews with most of the candidates. Editorial staff members also are attending various candidates forums.

The process is hard work and very time-consuming. But it can be challenging. And fascinating.

Thanks for the opportunities. But where is here?

Sorry. The link is active now. It should take you to a Vote 2006, a compilation of election stories, endorsements and other information.

I tried the link "here" and it takes me to the N&R front page.

Who is the N&R endorsing for school board dist. 2?

Allen Johnson said:

Look just below the News & Record nameplate and you should see a module titled "Vote 2006."
As for District 2, that endorsement runs on Saturday.

And in some cases, your conclusions can be stunning.

Tell me more, Sue. Which ones?

Did I miss something? Is it just me? I mean I saw a little blurb in the HP Enterprise about the Bush visit to Faulkner and how Terry Grier claimed that this indicated success system wide and not just at Faulkner, but by and large Terry was M.I.A. for the Bush visit. No apparent photo ops. Apparently wasn't at Pres. Bush's lunch table with other local dignitaries. What's up?
A snub? On Bush's or Terry's part. Did Rove steer Bush away? Did Guiflord co. Dems steer Terry away. Just seemed like a remarkably low profile. I thought we'd see Terry and the Pres. with their arms around each other. Hmmmm...Go figure.

Skeet Club Savage,

I heard he had an important job interview. His work here is done. It's time to move on.

A friend of mine drove along Brian Boulevard on the morning of his visit and said that there were stacks of "Get TG outtahere" signs.

George must of had an eyeful!

Skeet Club Savage said:

Perhaps Terry or one of his "advisers" sat him down and said: "Look Terry, you've spent almost the last three years embroiled in a bitter struggle involving a forced-busing philosophy to help underachieving schools, you can't very well go and trumpet an approach that involves a "stand and deliver" community proprietorship-based approach to improving schools", but who's to say.

It does seem Bush's speech on NCLB had some conflicting elements as well. On the one hand he touts the "Stand and Deliver" approach with faculty development and incentives and community involvement, but on the other hand talks about making it easier for people to bail out of their local school, leading one to ask how you can have both these things at the same time.

Stanley said:

Believe me, Grier didn't let this all slip away without some personal gain. Sooner or later we will find out.

I heard stories from several people that were at the airport when Bush arrived. They said there is no way Bush missed the Grier signs, going and coming!

On one of the news stations, I saw a protester holding a sign as Bush's motorcade went by.

I also heard that there were signs outside the Victory Junction Gang Camp.

Grier is a joke and hopefully Bush knows it.

What's in a Name? said:

Bush didn't even know his name! During his speech he referred to him as basically, "what's his face"..okay, I'm paraphrasing, but it's close. Poor Terry, there goes his dream of Secretary of Education on the big hill. For those of you that didn't know, that's his ultimate goal.

Allen Johnson said:

I agree he's not perfect, but has Terry Grier not done anything positive during his tenure here? What about the middle and early colleges, concepts that are being copied elsewhere?

Skeet Club Savage said:

Allen, they used to say about Mussolini that he made the trains run on time.

Allen, any conjecture on why Grier low-profiled the Bush visit?

Rod Stewart said:

Ah...
Wake up, Suzy
I think I got something to say to you
It's late September and my kids should
really be back at their school.
Instead of in Forsythe county,
or at home getting taught by mommy.
Oh, Suzie we wish we'd never seen your face.
You led them away from home
So the Emerywood kids wouldn't have to be alone.
But you stole my kids and that's what really hurts.

All we needed was a schoolboard rep with half a brain.
But you turned into a mother and mother what a nutter, you wore us out.
All you did was wreck our town
And send our kids all around.
Suzy we just can't take anymore...

We suppose our kids can go to private school
Or steal their daddy's cue and make a living out of playing pool.
Or go to the Institute Culinary and work at Arby's
Oh, Suzy we couldn't have tried anymore...

You made first class fools out of we,
now we're crazy as we can be
We voted for you, and you shafted us anyway...

Ah...Suzy, we wish we'd, never seen your face...

Good Luck,

yours truly,
Rod

We deserve MORE said:

Allen,

I will give Terry Grier credit for the Early College. I don't have much good to say about the Middle colleges as they are both failing kids just as the majority of our traditional schools. Sure, I'll admit that.

Thank you Terry Grier for the Early College. It's a sucessful program that has been a role-model across the state.

That's it. One good thing. It affects about 50 kids a year. So what about the thousands of others? The Early College is not for all and it can't accomodate all. So should we be "atta boy-ing" him all the way to the bank for ONE good idea?

Rod, thanks for the stirring rendition!
That's the most entertainment I've gotten out of the N&R in quite some time.

Garth 4 School Board said:

Allen,

Thanks for doing the right thing in this morning's paper. All of our kids will benefit if Garth is elected.

Thank you.

Maybe someday, Guilford County kids will be up to par with the rest of the country. This is a good start.

Allen Johnson said:

Thanks for the feedback. This was not an easy call.
As I wrote in another thread, these were two very solid candidates but Hebert's financial expertise distinguished him.
