Playstation-gate?

What a silly, overblown nonstory on a John Edwards staff member trying to finagle a PlayStation 3 before the official release from Wal-Mart.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reports that staffer for John Edwards tried to buy the game for the former U.S. senator's family at a Raleigh Wal-Mart.

The N&O adds: "Wal-Mart said in a release from its Arkansas corporate headquarters that an unnamed staff person for Edwards, a likely presidential candidate, contacted a Wal-Mart electronics manager in Raleigh on Wednesday. The staffer was trying to get the new Sony video game system for a member of Edwards' family, the release said."

Edwards says he wasn't aware of the attempt.

"My wife Elizabeth was looking for a PlayStation for my kids," Edwards told the N&O. "A young man who volunteers for us, apparently without our knowledge, was looking for a PlayStation 3 for himself and offered to look for one for us. He was not aware that Wal-Mart doesn't provide health insurance or decent pay for many of its employees or of my efforts to change the way Wal-Mart treats its employees."

"He made a mistake by using my name," Edwards said. "He was simply trying to help."

Yeah, right.

This sordid scandal settles it; the guy clearly isn't presidential material.

Allen, are you and Doug twins?

Typical politician, blame it on someone else.

What I find especially condescending, is that John E blames it on the youthful naivete of his employee that led to the "mistake."

I could imagine what John told this youthful gofer of his when he sent him on this journey, "I don't care how you get it, and feel free to use my name if neccessary, and if you do be sure to reference Senator at the beginning, and don't forget, get me the best price I need so save all the money I can for 2008."

Under those conditions, the youth had no choice but to shop at John's nemesis, Wal-Mart.

Actually, I thought John Robinson and I were twins.

I think Edwards exhibits the elitism and snobbery of many well-heeled Democrats. To them there's two kinds of people..."Us" and "the little people." Rules, laws, etc., apply to others, not them. They act as if they're royalty.
John Kerry is another example. Reminds me of the Kerry/Edwards photo op with their wives stopping at a McDonalds on the campaign trail. After pics, they dumped the cheap food and all retired to the motor home and ate the lobster lunch provided by a nearby yacht club.

Allen you can't be JR's twin...he doesn't have a mustache.

I tried to get a Playstation at Circuit City by telling them I was getting it as a gift for George Bush's son. Apparently he doesn't have a son, as the people in Circuit City told me. They must be Republicans.

This proves conclusively that Edwards's volunteers aren't paying any more attention to his dreary screeds against Wal-Mart than anyone else. And what, precisely, is meant by a man who "volunteers for us, apparently without our knowledge"? Apparent to whom? It's your knowledge, John.

Does anybody seem the absurdity in this tempest over a videogame?

Allen,

You must miss the point, if you feel that the tempest is over a viedogame. John Edwards got caught exposed in many ways, and then he tries to weasel his way out of it by laying down a political line about how Wal Mart treats its employees. You know, Edwards' Two Americas speech is getting to sound like a broken record, and he is a hypocrit to boot. Even worse, he's trying to lay teh blame off on a volunteer. Why doesn't he go stand in line like everyone else? Oh, he lives in Rich America, with his $50 million, and it would be unseemly for him to be caught standing in line with Poor Americans.

Mayve he needs to reconsider what he's going to be doing with his time the next two years. running for president is a loss leader for him.

It's precisely like the absurdity surrounding Bush I's encounter with the scanner: a trivial incident that crystallizes a general perception. And it's hilarious to boot!

jaycee said:

Brian44, that was grossly misreported by the press. Pres. Bush was actually being shown the newest technology that allowed scanners to read badly mangled bar codes, that's what he was remarking on. As usual, the media took it out of context and distorted it to try and embarrass a Republican. Another fine example of the news media giving us bogus information to distort the truth. We rely on the news media to give us the information upon which we form our opinions. When they give us slanted info, we form biased opinions which may not reflect reality.

It is funny. Getting the Playstation may be harder than getting the White House. "Now kids, I've got some good news and some bad news. First, the bad news. I couldn't get the Playstation (groans). Now, the good news. I'm going to be President (worse groans)."
