Thinking Out Loud

« Eastern rises, slowly but surely, from the ashes | Main | Who's who in Whoville »

The early returns: 2006

If anecdotal reports are any indication, the turnout at the polls today may be better than predicted, steady rain and all.

People seem energized by the bonds (for and against), a fierce sheriff's campaign and the very interesting District 18C Superior Court judge's race between Albirght and Bray.

My fearless prediction (based strictly on my gut, which is now filled with newsroom-supplied pizza):

The War Memorial Auditorium and Civil Rights Museum bonds will pass. The swim center won't. BJ Barnes will remain sheriff, beating Berkley Blanks, but it will be much closer than expected. Bray-Albright is too close to call.

I'll be back later to own up to these predictions, which, if past is prologue, will be dead wrong.

I think that's the first time I've ever heard Shakespeare quoted on the subject of bond issues. Well done!

I think Civil Rights will go down in flames as an Alston referendum. Bray will trounce Albright: she ran a smart campaign with two clear, resonant issues. Swim center: narrow yes, on the grounds of "who doesn't love swimming." Barnes comfortably over Blanks.

Not a good night was it? No doubt a boycott or two on the horizon.

Can I come downtown and pickup some of those counters and stools? I'm remodeling my basement.

So much for predictions. I feel like one of those poor saps who tried to pick NFL games last Sunday.

Thank goodness you are a better writer than prognosticator. The sheriff's race just showed that negative campagning by my oppenant did not get any traction. I appreciate the 61% of the voting public who had confidence in my leadership. I hope we can build on this election in this community by facing issues and dealing with facts and not relive the past and make emotional decisions. I look forward to many good conversations in the future and sharing resturant reviews. BJ

In retrospect, any second thoughts on how you handled the Taser issue, BJ?
