Meet the press
I will withhold judgment about plans by City Manager Mitchell Johnson and the City Council to hold weekly news conferences beginning on March 1. It all depends on what is said (or not said) at those sessions.
Could be a valuable communication tool. Also could be a waste of time.

It all depends on the questions that will be asked, doesn't it?

It also depends on the substance of the answers.

My guess is that after a month or so of smoke, mirrors, and non-responsive answers the interest will shrink up and die.

It was really interesting how this press conference thing came up so fast.
The idea generated from council members Sandra Anderson Groat and Mike Barber more so than it did from the city staffers like Mitchell Johnson (not that he seemed opposed to it or anything). Groat and Barber have been pushing for more transparency, and this is their very logical solution.
Council members are planning on taking turns coming to the conferences. But what we learn from these meetings will depend entirely on which council member is there. For instance, Dianne Bellamy-Small has resisted answering questions about the leak investigation. The issue will come up. How will she respond?
Mayor Keith Holliday feels the media often casts Greensboro in a negative light. Will that impact how he answers questions at a press conference?
Interesting stuff. Frankly, I'm looking forward to seeing what happens. Increased contact with these folks can only be a good thing, I believe.
Somehow, the public must be warned that I will show up on Channel 13 when the conferences are replayed!
