Nifong steps away

Mike Nifong finally has done the right thing.

The AP reports that the Durham district attorney has asked the state attorney general's office to appoint a special prosecutor to take over the Duke lacrosse sexual assault case.

It's about time.

Nifong has seemed reluctant to make this inevitable choice, but in reality, he really had no choice.

His case seems to be crumbling. He faces possible disbarment for unethical conduct.

He should have stepped away from this case long ago.

And so it is now also time for the end of Dotfong! So we all in GC can move on.

Yes, it is about time Nifong recused himself. If he had any decency, he would resign. What's surprising about this case, I think, is that he's been so persistently and stupidly digging himself into a hole. At every juncture up to this one--every single one--he's done the wrong thing, with the hope, apparently, that no one will notice.

I'm not surprised the NC DA's called him out, since the whole case raises huge questions about how DAs work (and whom they work for).

His naivete and lack of judgment, both legally and politically, have been incredible.
