Pimp my skyline

In case you missed it, this comment came in Monday from a reader who identified himself as Tim:

"I noticed in today's News & Record editors section about the notion of Roy Caroll building a 30-story twin next to Center Pointe. With a little photo editing I took the liberty of giving everyone a glimpes of what a 30-story tower could look like and how it would improve Greensboro's skyline. Here are the photo links:

Tim is very real and very cool. He's been maintaining the ballpark site as a citizen's effort for a long time (and took it off my hands, for which I still adore him). Those are great skyline photos, Tim.

Thank you very much Sue.

I think it time downtown started building towers again. Afterall most people judge a city's downtown, rightfully or not, by their skylines. The more skyscrapers downtown has, the more urban it looks. I do understand that developers dont build towers for looks but as downtown land becomes more and more scarce, these condo developments are going to have to be built upward and not outward. If the goal is to have thousand of people living downtown, developers will have to build upward. It just creates excitement to see a tower under construction.

Wouldn't it be nice if the on-again, off-again Triad Tower wound up downtown instead of near the airport? (We can always dream.)

Tim said:

I agree, its such a waste to build a 22-story by the airport when it can be built downtown. Triad Tower is suppose to have a 2-story aqaurium and an IMAX theater. WHY OH WHY IS THIS BEING PLANNED BY THE AIRPORT?

Roy if you are reading this, Please build a 30-story addition to Center Pointe. You can solve parking issues by having a parking deck take up the first 9 or 10 floors of the tower. The parking deck could be invisible from the outside. the next 5 floors could be used for office space, the next 14 floors could be condos or maybe even apartments. A restaurant could occupy the top floor. I would love to eat my steak while watching the sunset and Pilot Mountain!

Urban? More like suburban-tranplanted into a city. The shapes and accoutrements pasted onto these high-rise townhouses are more suited to exactly that: brownstone apartments/condos. Greensboro has a bad case of Teeteritis. It would signify a real entry into the 21st century if someone built an actual Postmodernist tower. Heck, I'd like even a real good Modernist one. The Wachovia building once was a pale but valiant effort at such, doomed from the start, I understand.
