Taking us to the Matt

Coliseum Managing Director Matt Brown never has been a shy guy.

He's been holding court over at Scoop the last couple of days about the failed swim center and War Memorial Auditorium bonds among other stuff.

Cynical, You gotta be kidding said:

Jazz singer....as in "jazz", as in hep cat, New York cool, Charlie Parker, drugs, leftist politics. Cool, man. =good

George Strait, as in Texas, as in country, as in white, as in patriotism, as in family values. = bad

Matt is right--dealing with the N&R, a no brainer.

Cynical dealing with the N&R? Nah

Im surprised we havent booked Tony Hawk for the huge skate boarding contingent that was awarded their own park this past bond vote! Maybe he will be here for the grand opening though. I bet that gets in the weekender or whatever we call it these days.

Like totally never surrender, dude! Awesome. totally. duuuuuuude.

Matt Brown is exactly right - why is the N&R promoting an unknown jazz artist who may attract a couple of hundred people when a legendary recording artist is playing the Greensboro Coliseum and likely will draw a full house?

That makes no sense to me - certainly many more people would be interested in an article on George Strait. When it comes to entertainment news, you should report on the things your readers actually are interested in, not the things that you think they should be interested in. I'm not saying there isn't room for an article on an unknown jazz artist, but not at the expense of a major concert like this one.

And, no, I don't think it has to do with a left-wing bias at all - I think it's just poor news judgment.

Matt Brown is always in red ink. He can lose more money than anybody I know. When asked why, he blames on somebody, anybody but him and his staff. You will hear more that he can't make money because the citizens turned the bond issue. He needs to learn to live within his means.

Yet, another simplistic view of how venues such as the CVM operate. The CVM complex, etc is not credited with the taxes collected on money spent in town due to restaurants, hotels, etc. Which, by the by, is a sizeable amount. The CVM complex, as a business, will never run at a profit but The City still reaps the tax dollar rewards. The City (us!) owns both "businesses"!

I would like to see someone put in print a reilable accounting of what the CVM complex actually means to Greensboro in terms of tax dollars. I know it has got to be out there.

Face it folks, some quality of life type events (toy shows, flea markets, boat shows, fishing shows and maybe even UNCG or A&T vs Duke) probably dont (ie cant) even pay the rent.

The whole sha-bang is simply far more complicated than the CVMs actual books. Speaking of which, I would also like to see how we compare to other similar venues across the country.

Please note, this is why CVM type venues, for the most part) are owned by municipalities and not private concerns. The moola is in the tax revenue not the venue itself. It shouldnt be that hard for folks to figure out.
