Anna Nicole and so on ...

It's too easy to question the priorities of some news organizations these days. It's too hard not to.

The network morning shows remain among the most egregious offenders.

First came the runaway astronaut in the diaper. Then came Anna Nicole. Then came the hard-hitting "Today" report on the teenager who has had the hiccups for two weeks.

Anna Nicole is fascinating from the perspective that she is satire. She was a walking, talking satire of the material / celebrity-driven/ media-driven mass Marilyn/ Elvis culture that we have evolved after eighty years of Hollywood. (just witness her 300+ pound jaunt down the model runway and "how do you like me now" speech at the musical award show)

This is the only way she can be understood (providing you don't suscribe to the theory that she is just clueless and completely insane.) Bold satire is always fascinating, epecially when carried out to it's ultimate tragic conclusion. It's just like the newscaster on the movie Paddy Cheyefsky's "Network" who's on-air suicide garnished the highest network ratings ever.
It's just like watching a circus performer.
"The daring young woman on the flying trapeze".

No net.

Allen, several weeks ago on a Saturday, Barack Obama had his kickoff campaign rally declaring his candidacy. I had never seen him speak; and was eager to see what he had to say, how he said it, and what the sensation was all about. Some conservatives regard him-- if they had to choose from among the Democrats running-- as the "preferred" candidate from among the current top tier.

I sat in front of the TV flipping among the various news channels and C-Span. Most showed very brief footage of him walking in front of the crowd and waving. There was no attempt to provide even the most brief excerpts from his speech.

But I got to see plenty of Anna Nicole coverage.
