Lost ...

My continuing frustration with the Chief Wray saga is the lack of context and the gaping holes in the narrative, which is more cryptic than an episode of "Lost."

Scraps of information make it hard to solve the puzzles of the deposed chief's downfall and the ex-chief's insistence that his department contained dirty cops who needed removing.

That said, the latest taped revelations are unflattering to Wray and paint a disturbing picture. That Wray was a flawed manager seems clearer than ever. That he appears to have misled the city manager about his knowledge of a "black book" containing black officers' photos is troubling.

Meanwhile, some defend the taped episode in which ex-Deputy Chief Randall Brady discusses with Detective Scott Sanders the need to deal with a woman who was stalking Wray, "even if we have to do something to make it look like she's done something."

Puh-lease.

The woman may well have been disturbed and even deluded. But the manner in which this was discussed by Brady and was being handled was ethically wrong and arguably an abuse of Wray's power and position.

Is there a pattern in the Wray administration of addressing potentially legitimate problems and issues clumsily and heavyhandedly?

Sure seems so.

Is the object of Wray's obsession, Lt. James Hinson, a bad cop?

I don't know.

Is Wray a racist?

I don't know that either.

Did Wray alienate many of his officers and erode the trust of a city manager who had played a key role in hiring him? Absolutely.

Too many pieces of this puzzle are still missing. It would be helpful if the city released more information, not as a PR ploy but to aid the community's understanding of what is going on.

Why are hard facts simply dismissed by the council? Why has no one called for an investigation of Officer Hinson's alleged misuse of his position for personal gain? Did anyone look into the documents uncovered by Jerry Bledsoe at Grandover Golf Club that clearly had Officer Hinson's signature on a contract acting on behalf of the City of Greensboro? He had no authority to do this. He also had not set-up a legal non-profit organization at the time for which he was promoting. What happened to this money raised? Have you even bothered to examine the Secretary of State's corporate records that clearly show Officer Hinson has set-up a recent FOR-profit corporation with the acronym C.O.P.S.? ( http://www.secretary.state.nc.us/corporations/Filings.aspx?PItemId=8077549# ) Don't you think this is a bit misleading and the cause for a possible conflict of interest??

Why don't you guys quit hiding behind political correctness and do what's right for once?? Quite frankly, I'm tired of the pervasiveness of reverse racism in this city. It seems that any government or city official of color in Greensboro gets a "free pass" to act as they please. They say and do as they wish while hiding under the shield of the race card.

After re-reading my comments/statements above, I am compelled to point out that my posting was not necessarily directed at the original author, Allen Johnson. I find no fault with his posting with the exception that it lacks any reference to even a remote possibility that Wray is being railroaded by those who readily use the race card to their advantage.

I do agree that we should not be formulating pre-judgments until all the facts are revealed. (I am as guilty as anyone here...) I was simply presenting an alternative viewpoint that I feel should be considered...

Does anybody know, was Wray's neighbor ever actually threatened or harrassed in any way?

Allen, if you'll read Bledsoe's series in The Rhino Times I think you'll find some of the "missing pieces" that the N&R reporters either chose not to publish or naively failed to recgonize.

I've read most of the series. I still have questions.

I believe if you would talk to the rank & file of the GPD, that Hinson is referred to as a DIRTY cop.

What has Hinson's being a good or bad cop got to do with Brady hinting that it is okay to falsify evidence?

Hey, Allen, are the N&R blogs having "technical difficulties?" Maybe these guys were trying to post comments to a different entry on your blog, or a different blog altogether.

:-)

Best regards,
Tony

Savage,

Does the answer to your question make any difference to anyone at City Hall? The intent here is to slime Brady enough to try to get his court victory overturned. Johnson and Company didn't like losing. It seems that the judge ruled on the term so his contract, without regard to his bahavior, and he said so. If the City didn't have a clause allowing them an out, they really have no case, so they'll go off spending money, chasing an appeal.

Gate City-K,

If I may dare interject, suggesting Allen go out in the field and actually verify details and ramifications of any of his Ivory Tower pronouncements can quickly trip off the built-in protections instituted by the N&R Dept. of Homeland Security.

You will possibly be ignored, subject to censure, be registered as a possible hijacker, or, and most ominous...be declared one of the dreaded "Walking Dead-Horsed".

Tony,

As regards your comment about posters being confused wether they were on the wrong blog and what did Hinson being a bad or good cop have to do with Brady, then ask Allen. He teed this strand off with the following in part:

Is there a pattern in the Wray administration of addressing potentially legitimate problems and issues clumsily and heavyhandedly?

Sure seems so.

Is the object of Wray's obsession, Lt. James Hinson, a bad cop?

I don't know.

Is Wray a racist?

I don't know that either.

Allen brought Hinson in the conversation when he startred this subject, so he is not off topic here. And, Lorraine Ahern is back on the case again this week, I notice. She went out of her way to tie Brady to the Wray case by mentioning the "secret police" and the "black book".

"Brady, who directly supervised Special Intelligence — known among the ranks as “the secret police” — tells Sanders to handle the problem neighbor on Banking Street?

Johnson keeps saying that this case isn't about black and white, but who do you think first planted this seed? Doh! The Wray matter has always been about black and white and dirty cops.

One aside, if you please. What's the smart money on who the six people are that the SBI will be bringing six indictments in for corruption within the police department?

Allen,

Why has no one on the N&R's staff bothered to investigate the allegations that I referenced against Hinson in my first response above? If Jerry Bledsoe can uncover the contract at Grandover Resort then please explain why one of your investigative reporters hasn't attempted to do the same. Is it because some in this City including various staff members of the News & Record have no interest in the truth. If officer Hinson was illegally contractually binding the GPD on contracts, running illegal fund raising scams under false pretenses, working private security gigs while on duty, etc., don't you think that an investigative report is in order. All the News & Record seems concerned with is the now debunked myth of both the 'secret police' and the 'black book.' I mean come on - a simple lineup book hyped and blatantly lied about by the author of the RMA report is all you have to go with in order to completely ruin and besmirch a man's reputation. Sadly, when all is said and done we will all have to pay the price in the form of a civil lawsuit by former Chief Wray.

What ever happened to unbiased investigative journalism????
