Thinking Out Loud

« Gatten to Bellamy-Small: It's time to say goodbye | Main | The meet-up: An update »

This can't be real

When I first got wind of it, a column titled "Why I Hate Blacks," posted at asianweek.com on Feb. 23 by Kenneth Eng, had to be some kind of a sick put-on, I assumed.

Apparently it was not, writes Richard Prince. Here's what it said.

The column eventually was pulled and was denounced by a number of Asian Americans. And the writer was suspended.

But how could it be published in the first place? What could this man's editors have possibly been thinking?

Is this guy any relation to Deena Hayes?

And this is different from a Louis Farrakhan speech...how?
They both preach hate for another race. I've read plenty of columns, articles, etc., by blacks on why blacks hate whites. What's the difference? Racism is racism, no matter which side of the color line you're on.

Man, this column is idiotic trash. Eng's entire "arguments", as they are, are based on nothing more than broad bathroom wall-style stereotypes and some guy who attended his high school.

What I don't understand is how this got into print in the first place. Didn't an editor read it first? Sure, news outlets shouldn't shy away from controversial opinions, but Eng clearly has nothing more to offer than racism.

Yes, Louis Farrakhan and Deena Hayes have made racist statements in the past - and both have been roundly criticized for doing so. And just because other people have said similar things doesn't make Eng's statements any less offensive.

Mr. Johnson,
Can you you recall just this week. Your paper had a blog by one JD Rockfeller, that called American Indians, illiterate people that lived in caves and wore funny clothes, and a whole lot more. My mom spoke perfect Cherokee, nuff said, needless to say how I felted about this. I told my wife another mixed Cherokee, that if this was about Blacks are Muslins the NR would be raising hell.

Mr. Johnson:
I am sorry that offensive comment ran.
would like to say we can police every blog comment that is posted on every blog, around the clock. We can't. But we do delete such comments when we become aware of them or when readers bring them to our attention.
That said, there is a big difference in that and knowingly and willingly publishing a piece as mean and as ignorant as Kenneth Eng's.

It's great to see that your philosophy has evolved, and with strong, loaded words like "racism," no less. Why just two weeks ago (Feb. 15), in reference to Tim Hardaway's "coming out of the closet" as a homophobe, you wrote:

"So who made any of you the judge of what’s 'right' or not? Just because you personally disagree with someone doesn’t make their opinion 'right' or 'wrong' it just makes it different."

Welcome friend. We finally agree that hate speech should be criticized as such.

Ribbing aside, I 100% agree with your post today.
