The meet-up: An update

I have spoken with the folks at The Press (301 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive) and we're on for our meet-up in Wednesday, March 14, at 5 p.m.

We'll gather in the corner of the bar where there are chairs and sofas.

Some ground rules:
1. No sharp implements.
2. There'll be name tags for you to identify yourselves in whatever manner you prefer.
3. Some other members of the editorial staff will be there.
4. Blog all you want about what you see and hear.
5. If Skeet Club Savage shows up, I'll buy him a drink.

The folks at The Press will need a head count, so I'll ask one more time if you don't mind to RSVP via comments here.

Y'all come.

If nothing happens, I will be there. I am not familar with Greensboro. I go to the airport often. Is the name of the place The Press, and a general location of this road.

Dave Ribar said:

Allen:

I'm also still planning on attending, and secretly hoping for both Skeet and Dot Kearns to be there :)

Skeet Club Savage said:

The Savage will indeed attend.

If he is accompanied by Dot, he will be dressed as Geronimo.

Skeet Club Savage said:

The other thing I would like to see is that at least 15% of the vendors that supply product to this tavern are minority owned and that the bar itself have some minority ownership.

One could ask what the above would have to do with anything, but just like education in GC,
Duhhhhhh......

I'll bring Dot just to see your costume... you Savage you.

If the tavern is publicly financed, I'm with Geronimo on his MWBE requirement. But then again... what does that have to do with pouring a decent drink?

I'll be there Allen. Thanks,

Actually, as I understand it, the bar does have a minority co-owner.

Skeet Club Savage said:

Allen, I can only hope this is true so we can all rest easy.

Frequent poster said:

I wish I could come... You boys forget that someone has to be home during this time to help with homework,....get dinner going.., get the kids to their sport events...it's the most hellish time of the day...for MOMs anyway. Did you assume all your posters were good ol' boys? Man, I NEED the drink the MOST!

Anyway, have a drink for me and be NICE to the savage!

Doug Clark said:

I'll be there so Savage and I can show you Greensboro folks how well we High Pointers get along with each other.

Count me in. I am looking forward to it.

Olga, it'll be good to have you.

Truth said:

I have thought about this a lot but I feel that I cannot socialise with some of the people who have conspired to spoil the Education of my children while never offering to lead by example and offer to do the same with their own.

I love my children too much.

Truth...

Leading by example is a two way street... here's another one:

Adults don't sit in front of computers and anonymously let fly with never ending invective. To be taken seriously, they go out in the off-line world to show they are more than just a carefully constructed avatar. Adults talk things out, face-to-face, one-on-one, and aren't afraid to assign a human face, and perhaps even a real name, to their strongly held convictions.

The above might not apply to your household, but it is one of the things I am teaching MY children.

Helen Bed said:

Hog, talking to you and Allen face-to-face at some bar in Greensboro is not going to solve any school situation either. Folks like Truth HAVE spoken face-to-face with school board members and have lead a prestine adult example of trying to work things out in a civil, constructive manner. Believe me, Truth's children have been taught very well the manner in which to evoke change. How dare you try to make him out to be some monster just because he doesn't type out his given name, or that you assume "his household" is not a caring enviornment in which to teach children. You should not assume you know the reasons he cannot devulge his personal information.

I appreciate that you're going to "the meeting". Let us know all the world's problems you remedy by "talking things out face-to-face" in a bar over alcohol. I can't wait for an update on how our world will be a better place thanks to you and Allen.

Helen...

Where did I characterize anyone as 'some monster'? Also I didn't forward either of the assumptions you attribute to me.

Anonymous posters, regardless of who they are or what their reasons might be for being so, don't carry near the credibility of real people in my book.

All I know of "Stormy" is what I read here and elsewhere on blogs. I was hoping he/she might change that and get to know those he/she derides so readily. He/she might be a saint in real life, I'm making no judgements nor assumptions about that because I know nothing of his/her real life.

Allen's meeting is not going to solve any of the "world's problems". It is simply an opportunity to meet, talk and get to know each other a little. But Stormy decided to pass and go on deriding from the shadows even in his/her decline of Allen's invitation.

But, you defend him/her and jump on me? Could that be because you know the real "Stormy" as you claim?

I'd welcome the same opportunity and privilege.

Cypress Street Runner said:

As a neighbor of Mr. Hoggard's I apologize for his behavior. Thankfully the voters of Greensboro have deemed it wise to not give him any real power.

Why if he was in dread-locks and a moo-moo I couldn't tell the difference between him and DBS.

Helen said:

Stormy?? Hog, did you fall out of a window? As far as I can tell, no "Stormy" has posted on this strand?? I might know a "Stormy" too, but I was talking about "Truth" in my above post. I think you owe "Stormy" an apology. Sheesh, you can't even get your anonymous people straight! Have another beer!

Helen said:

and btw, Hog, how do we know that "David Hoggard" is your REAL name? Can you prove that? And how can you prove that the names given here are indeed REAL names? Will you all be checking birth certificates at the door?

Really, my comments are from ME whether my name is Terry Grier, Dot Kearns, Orville Redenbacher or Mozart...it doesn't change what I say. Also, I'm not losing any sleep over the fact that I'm not in "your book".

My sincere apologies to "Stormy"'s avatar. Of course I meant "Truth" in my post above.

Helen says.. "Sheesh, you can't even get your anonymous people straight!" and she is right about that. They're all pretty much the same to me.

As for the beer offer... I'm not really thirsty, but, if you're buyin'...?

Tony Ledford said:

Allen, if you're still counting heads, I'm still planning on being there for this.

Sorry my blog (pitiful as it is) is semi-functional at the moment. Have to find the time to figure out what happened to my Wordpress installation.

Regards,
Tony

David Doolittle said:

Seems like someone has had too many beers this afternoon.
It worries me a little about this meeting being in a drinking establishment since I dont drink and I worry about people that do. Nevertheless, I may turn up.

Allen Johnson said:

Hope you can come, David. They serve a mean ginger ale, too.
As for the rest of us, I'm not entirely sure we need to imbibing around one another.
Then again, maybe it would help.

Biotekboy said:

Allen,

I have to drop off for soccer practice, but if you think you will still be going by six, count me in.

David,

I was at The Press last night and they don't have bourbon, are you ok with that? They have beer and of course lots of fine wines. From what I remember of a post on Ed Cone's blog where there was a picture of a holiday table, he knows something about nice red wines, so maybe we should let him pick some of the wines?

Savage,

I'm still laughing about the "Braveheart" parody on Doug Clark's blog. I drank an Australian blend last night labeled "Innocent Bystander" you can have fun with that on many levels. Let me know if you need a lift back to NHP.

All,

I don't think we are going to solve any problems at this get together but it may help us by allowing a civil discourse of many viewpoints and we may learn something about each other.

Stormy said:

Hoggard,

You must have really tied one on yesterday. I haven't been around all day, and you are accusing me of, well, I don't really know what.

You say that I should get to know those that I deride? You say that you'd like the opportunity to know me, but guess what? I already know you, and I've observed you up close for some time. I'd just as soon keep it a long-distance relationship.

David Doolittle said:

Thankyou Allen, I was getting a bit worried there with all this talk about beer drinking by some.
Its Ginger Ale for everyone then!

Truth said:

Hoggie confused you with me Stormy.
I feel honored.

His posts give me more reason not to come though. I refuse to lower myself to such depths.

jaycee said:

I'm with Stormy. I don't see the need for folks that stridently disagree with each other to gather with alcohol involved. No thanks, I already know each of you too well.

Stormy (I got it right this time), You say, "I already know you". Have we actually met, like, in person? If so, did you take that opportunity to express your disdain for me?

I doubt it. Avatars generally bear little resemblance to their owners. I'm guessing that's the real reason why you won't be there. You don't want anyone who doesn't already know who YOU (not to be confused with Stormy) are to have a peek behind the curtain. It might ruin your tough-guy construct.

I'll bet, in real life, you are a pussycat just like "Truth"'s owner. Come to the meeting. Prove me wrong.

Biotekboy, Looking forward to seeing you again. I'm fine with Ed choosing.

Stormy said:

Hoggard,

Yeah, you figured me out. I'm just the little guy behind the curtain. But, other hand, ,you expose yourself for what you are every day.

True enough.

Truth said:

I certainly prefer more civilised company. I am looking forward to another meeting of the North High Point Liberation army in Hams in a couple of weeks. Hope to see you there again Stormy!

Aycock Professor said:

Sorry everybody, we try our best to keep Hoggard confined to his own 'hood.

I don't know whether or not N&R subscriptions are up since his column has been out, but according to the GSO Sewer Department the flow of you know what is up on coinciding days of the month.

Good to know, Aycock... at least I'm having SOME effect on the city.

Truth said:

But it stinks.

Jim Langer said:

Don Juan told Casteneda, once they know your real name (and face), you lose your powers. (Never actually read the silly books, but have heard about them from various more New Age or pseudo-spiritualistic sorts of friends.I am not that superstitious.)

Is it really about power? I hope it's about learning, a different route to power, I suppose.

I'll be there. Big week for us here, tons of after-hours, overtime work, but I want to see what comes of face-to-face conversation.

Allen Johnson said:

I expect a good time by all. I recall seeing Sarah Jones, a News & Record columnist and fellow blogger, meeting one of her most critical commenters in person for the first time at ConvergeSouth. They got along great.
And, no, I do not plan to hire an off-duty cop for protection.

David Doolittle said:

Doesn't sound like you need protection Allen but it seem like some of the posters have an issue with David Hoggard. I also sense a hint of aggressiveness with him that makes me think I'll stay on the other side of the room.

Mick said:

Hoggard... aggressive? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA .........

Im tired or I would keep it up. He is the consumate southern gentleman and conversationalist.

David Doolittle said:

Very funny Mick!
