One Guilford, many voices
One concern about One Guilford as we move forward toward a sequel:
We need to consider ways to attract a more diverse array of leaders. Sue mentioned this in her assessment and Mac Sims of the East Market Street Development Corp. (who did attend) expressed the same sentiments in a conversation Friday. Mac hoped that black leaders in particular would see the need to be part of such an important conversation as it continues in the coming months. So should Hispanic leaders and representatives of other races, groups and ethniciities.
Guilford County speaks more than 100 languages. They weren't as well represented at the symposium as they can and should be.
We worked from an extremely exhaustive and diverse invitaiton list. But it obviously wasn't enough. We'll try harder.

Allen:
I want to first thank you for having the initiative to begin such a dialogue ... I agree diversity is an issue when bringing people together, perhaps the next meeting can be scheduled on a Saturday which would allow more people who otherwise could not come to have an opportunity to participate ... also, may I suggest you schedule different meetings to discuss topics of interest, which would enable the audience to particpate more fully on a topic of personal interest to them ... I am very interested in continuing not only a dialogue with persons intersted in our education system and the plight facing our your black males but also to begin to create an action plan with public and private participation ... and if there is anything I can do to assist with this effort, please let me know.

I agree w/Ms. Wright. I think the first meeting was an excellent way to get the issues on the table but now I think there has to be focus on specific issues - one interest I have is not only the education and minorities but also opportunities for all young professionals to remain in Greensboro to make a difference.

Olga and Pat:
Thanks for your interest. There will be updates on this blog and in the newspaper as they develop. We are hopeful to schedule a follow-up session in the coming months.
We appreciate any and all ideas about the focus. Please keep them coming.

After reading David Hoggard's column it really did get me to thinking:
What IF like a flying saucer came down and hovered over the N&R offices and like did that electro-magnetic thing flying saucers always do that like jams up all the electronics and computers and like you couldn't put out the paper that day and stuff.
Or what IF the roof of the Eugene St. offices like collapsed and the schoolboard was in there and stuff...and education actually like got better.
And what IF while driving home tonight like a crane fell on my car and I would miss supper like for a long time.
Or what IF like a hair dryer would like fall in the tub while somebody was taking a bath
WHO WOULD STEP UP?
