A record turnout?
You read it here first.
Based on little more than a gut feeling, I predict a big turnout in the Oct. 9 primary.
The signs are encouraging:
Big audiences at most forums.
Surprisingly large and engaged crowds at the News & Record's two town hall meetings.
Nearly three dozen candidates, most of whom are well-qualified and campaigning seriously.
More and more candidates with blogs and Web sites.
(One of our blogging brethren, Joe Guarino, even has come up with his own candidate questionnaires.)
Greensboro will come out in bigger numbers than it has in a long, long time on Oct. 9 and Nov. 6.
Or not.

"Based on little more than a gut feeling, I predict a big turnout in the Oct. 9 primary."
Based on observations in my sphere of influence, and at places like the D3 get together, I think you may be correct, Allen.
In all the city elections since I've been a Greensboro resident, our city government's elected officials have been placed in office by a shockingly low minority of potential voters.
That's an invitation for creeping cronyism and possible corruption.

Allen,
Just for general information, could you please print the names of your staff who decide the candidate endorsements and their party affiliation?
Thanks.

Party affiliation is public record and you require names on your LTE endorsements.
Can we expect you to follow the same guidelines that you present to the public?

Tony:
Thanks for your question.
The names, telephone numbers and e-mail addresses of the people who make editorial endorsements are published at the top of the editorial page every day.
As you say, party affiliation is a matter of public record. You could look ours up if you'd like, based on those names, but I'll save you the time.
Personally, I have been an unaffiliated voter since 1984. I have voted in both Democratic and Republican primaries over the years.
How the rest of the editorial board breaks down:
Publisher Robin Saul, Republican
Editorial Writer Doug Clark, unaffiliated
Editorial Writer Ken Irons, Democrat
Editorial Writer Elma Sabo, Democrat

Thanks for the info Allen,
Just to verify, are you saying that Publisher Robin Saul is "hands on" in the endorsement selection?
Posted on October 1, 2007 1:17 PM
Tony, Robin does not sit in on all discussions but he signs off on all endorsements.
He approves what we write before it goes into the paper.

Thanks for your time explaining this interesting subject Allen.
One final question:
Since 2004 when Saul became publisher, has the REP Saul ever changed or altered the endorsements that were compiled by the (2) UNA's and (2) DEM's?
Posted on October 2, 2007 2:20 PM
No, he has not.
