A sad story, the next chapter
This from the News & Record's Web site: The Dudley High School teacher who scuffled with a 14-year-old student on Nov. 13 has been charged with simple assault.
The teacher, Robert Lee Bullard, 59, apparently realized what a dumb thing he'd done from the moment it happened. He resigned later that same day.
But his troubles aren't over.
According to his arrest warrant, Bullard punched the student, Tyrick Glover, in the face.
Bullard was a newcomer. He had been hired in August to teach social studies.
What a sad situation.
Meanwhile, I'm hoping the Smith teacher who told off a class in a well-publicized -- and cell-phone-recorded -- tirade laced with cuss words, gets to return to the classroom.
Even if all of them didn't appreciate it, she seemed to geuninely care about those kids.

Unless it was self-defense with witnesses, the Dudley teacher is probably in a bad situation.

Has the teacher given any explanation as to why he hit the student? I find it difficult to believe that it was totally unprovoked, but as Savage suggests, unless there is some corroboration or video, the teacher is going to lose.
There are documented incidents in this school system where a teacher has been accosted and hit causing serious injury, but in those cases, nothing ever happened to the student, other than a short suspension.

As I understand it, there was a confrontation at the door of the classroom. The student was late and there was some pushing back and forth of the door by the two before the blow.

Sounds like the student was in the wrong, provoked the teacher, and is now claiming to be a "victim." The teacher gets the shaft though he's probably the real victim.
Liberalism and "victimization" is alive and well here in GSO.

While what he did was wrong, I am sympathetic to the teacher.
Still, I'm not willing to rush to judgement just yet and roundly condemn the student.
I need to know more.
