Teach your children well

School leaders, community members and parents gathered Tuesday to discuss why schools have become such violent places.

Only hours later, an ugly incident at an Oak Hill Elementary School Christmas program, of all settings, provided one unsettling answer as to why: Students are learning such behavior at home.

A fight broke out among adults in the audience while the program was under way. A parent captured the incident on videotape.

Superintendent Terry Grier copied this e-mail to media this morning:

I spoke to the principal of Oak Hill Elementary School this morning. Sara Roberts informed me that three female parents, with a history of disliking each other, attended a school Holiday program last night. During the program they began shouting obscenities at each other. The incident escalated into a chair throwing, hair pulling, fight. Two other female parents tried to break up the fight and also became involved. At the same time, a small group of male parents began shouting vulgarities and obscenities. The police was called, but many of those involved left before they arrived.

Since it was a school activity, many parents had video cameras present and taped much of the fight. Someone sent a copy of their tape to Fox 8. The police are coming to the school this morning to interview staff present. No charges have been filed to date.

What a sad, shameful display. What an even worse shame that it occurred as innocent elementary school children were attempting to perform a Christmas play.

An update from the school's principal, as provided by the school system:

On the evening of December 18, 2007, Oak Hill Elementary had a Holiday Program at 6:30 pm. At approximately 7:30, an argument between parents escalated to physical violence in the middle of the gym. Chairs were thrown. Obscenities were loudly exclaimed. Three mothers did physical punch each other and two other mothers attempted to break up the fight. The fighting continued for approximately 10 minutes in total including the yelling and the physical hitting.

According to witnesses, the argument started by a father who approached another student about pushing his daughter while on stage. The one parent (not of the student who pushed) told the father to not talk to a child about that but to take it up with the principal. At that point, two other parents (twin sisters) began yelling and shouting. I had to stop the program and remind everyone to be respectful to the children on stage. However, the yelling escalated further and thus the fight began.

The police were called to help by multiple members of the audience as well as a staff member who was directed to call by me. Once the police arrived, only a few people who were actually involved were questioned. However the twin sisters had left the school property by then. The police are investigating the incident and charges are pending. We received word that a parent did tape the incident however; she did not share that with me.You may have already seen the tape attached to Fox 8 website.

I am proceeding with a ban for each of the parents who were actually participating in the fight. I have also received word this morning that one of the parents may actually live in Davidson County. My social worker is investigating that at this time.

We have also received a call this morning from one non-English speaking parent who informed us that their youngest child (not of school age) was hit with a chair in the head. She did not take the child to the doctor and the child is fine. But the accident report is being filed any way.

This is the latest update on the situation. Thanks for your help.

Honestly, how can we as adults have high expectations for our children when the adults get up and fight...in front of the children? What's next?

I sadly shook my head when I watched the video of that disgusting display. It probably undid about 5 years of anti-violence education at Oak Hill.
Pitiful, just pitiful.

Why should this surprise anybody? Despite the many, many good, wonderful things about America, at the same time, it is and always has been perhaps the most violent, militaristic society on the planet.

We wrote slavery into our constitution, and we are the only nation on earth that fought a war for slavery. We committed ethnic genocide on Native Americans. We are the only nation to use the atomic bomb --and on civilians no less -- despite ample evidence that now shows that our government knew the Japanese were preparing to surrender.

Every few years our news media and government deceive us into supporting unjustified rich men's wars for greed. We torture our enemies (which IS terrorism). We devote more than 40 percent of our federal taxes to the military and weaponry and debt service on past wars -- compared to only 3-5 percent to education. Our movies and media industries are the most violent on earth. And then we wring our hands because our citizens lack self-discipline and self-restraint?

Disgusting. Simply disgusting. I hope the people involved in this disgraceful episode are arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. If there was any justice, they would lose custody of their children, as clearly they are unfit to be parents.

And the above poster's comments about America and its values are completely unfounded and way off base. This isn't a problem with American society. You certainly can't blame our military for a fight in High Point, N.C.

This is a problem of personal responsibility - or lack thereof. The people who brawled at Oak Hill should be held accountable for their actions.

The problem is, from a purely legal standpoint, only minor charges would likely result. But a ban from the campus would seem in order.
What a sad state, that in an era when we encourage more parental involvement in public education, that we'd actually be needing to keep some parents AWAY from school grounds.

It was a Christmas program Dr. Grier, not a holiday program. Get your facts.

I left the Triad 10 years ago for this very reason. You have a culture in the area that worships this type of behavior. People have to act stupid because they feel like someone disrespects them. Fighting in front of children and people appearing to encourage that behavior is a result of that mindset. Instead of trying to break up the fight, they are running to fan the flames and perhaps get a cheap-shot to impress their friends. These are parents!!

This isn't a problem resulting from too little government money. It's a problem resulting from living in a society that encourages violence and rioting. All too often, ignorant people are all too quick to emulate the wanton behavior they hear in music and see on television.

Dr Grier won't do anything about it. It would require admitting someone was wrong and that might cause some political problems. Add this episode to the Grimsley fight and you have yet another embarassing stain on the Triad.

I assume "anonymous" is too embarrassed to leave a name, as he/she should be. What a pathetic attempt at a history lesson ...

"Why should this surprise anybody? Despite the many, many good, wonderful things about America, at the same time, it is and always has been perhaps the most violent, militaristic society on the planet."

Really? THE most violent and militaristic? More so than Nazi Germany? The USSR? Cambodia under Pol Pot? The PRC under Mao? Prussia under Friedrich the Great? France under Napoleon? Sparta under Leonidas? The Aztecs under any of their kings? The Romans? The Vikings? Please. PLEASE. Your histrionics are laughable, at best.

"We wrote slavery into our constitution, and we are the only nation on earth that fought a war for slavery. We committed ethnic genocide on Native Americans. We are the only nation to use the atomic bomb --and on civilians no less -- despite ample evidence that now shows that our government knew the Japanese were preparing to surrender."

1. We didn't "write slavery" into the Constitution. The Constitution acknowledges the reality of slavery and makes provision for it, but many who signed it were opposed to the institution even then. It doesn't endorse slavery as a universal good. The Constitution never did. And the 13th amendment overwrote all those provisions (and yes, those amendments are part of "the Constitution.")
2. Ethnic genocide on Native Americans? Hardly. Yes, many, many died; mostly as a result of disease, however, which was not intentionally spread. That's not "genocide." There was no organized campaign to exterminate all Native Americans, even though there was great evil done against them by way of cheating them out of land, illicit wars, etc. But the NAs were not completely innocent, either.

The school is located in one of the worst neighborhoods in High Point. This area shows what becomes of communities that do not strive for new job growth and instead hinge thier future on the past. Not that jobs would make some parents not act like children, just that this would not have likely happened in better neighborhoods. Note that the fight at Grimsley a couple of weeks ago did not happen with kids from traditional middle class neighborhoods, but from very depressed areas of town.

I hate that official doubletalk is that neighborhood troubles is code for gang activity.

Mike Stone said:

First, I must agree with Sam Gaines. The "anonymous" poster has lost grip with reality and history. Amazing how some individuals can and will use any event to spew such diatribe. What in the world did his/her post have to do with the incident? AMAZING!!!

As for the incident - the quick and easy first step is to ban all of the parents and participants from ANY school property except for the BOE meeting room where they should be required to apologize with the same zest and zeal that they brought to the fight. Next, these individuals should be required to perform community service within the school as restitution for their stupidity. Without a public apology and community service, these fools should not darken the doorways and halls of our taxpayer funded schools.

My letter to Dr Grier this morning, no reply yet: I will post it if he does reply.

Fox 8 video link
Dr Grier,

You have probably already seen this but I have a vested interest in resource being applied to this situation. My wife teaches at Oak Hill and was present last night at the program. Families were crying as they left, many who do not speak English did not understand what was happening or what they were supposed to do. I hear daily about the discipline issues about an assortment of kids that are chronically disruptive, disrespectful and a threat to other students. It is no wonder they are like this after seeing this videotheir parents are out of control. It is unfortunate that a few kids who need extreme behavior modification are allowed to remain in school and tear down the foundation that is being built for the kids who want to be there and need a safe and disciplined environment to excel. This maybe their only chance to start down a path of education that will open the world up to them. Again what are you going to do to remove this cancer from this school? If it is not stopped now at the K-5 level you will only compound the problem by moving them through the system and they become empowered by their ability to get away with murder with no consequence. Spend the money now to save these kidsmove them into controlled teaching environments with behavior modification and socialization the first goal. Use teachers with the expertise and training in a focused and centralized school that serves the entire county. The current behavioral specialists are spread so thin they cant get to these kids fast enough or spend enough time with them to do any good.

You have had many innovative programs attributed to youI am sure you will receive overwhelming support if you crack down on chronic discipline issues and raise it to one of your highest priorities. The few should not rule or spoil the education for the many.

Your teachers need a consistent and unwavering leadership that will take the troublemakers out of the classroom and let them do their core competencyteach.

I look forward to your reply,

Without debating every point pro or con I do want to point out that we did give small pox contaminated blankets knowing good and well the blankets were around small pox victims before giving the blankets to Native Americans. Is that genocide, in my book yes. Have other countries done worse, sure, but to think we did not intentionally give Native Americans small pox and other such diseases is a bit naive at best.

Let's see life in the Guilford County Schools goes like this....

Mom got drunk and Dad got drunk
At our Christmas party
We were drinkin' champagne punch
And homemade eggnog
Little sister brought her new boyfriend
He was a Mexican
We didn't know what to think of him
'Til he sang Feliz Navidad
Feliz Navidad
Brother Ken brought his kids with him
The three from his first wife Lynn
And the two identical twins
From his second wife MaryNell
Of course he brought his new wife Kaye
Who talks all about AA
Chain smokin' while the stereo plays
Noel, Noel, The first Noel
Carve the turkey turn the ball game on
Mix margaritas when the eggnog's gone
Send somebody to the Quik-Pak store
We need some ice and an extension cord
A can of bean dip and some Diet Rite
A box of tampons and some Marlboro Lights
Hallelujah everybody say cheese
Merry Christmas from the family
Fran and Rita drove from Harlingen
I can't remember how I'm kin to them
But when they tried to plug their motorhome in
They blew our Christmas lights
Cousin David knew just what went wrong
So we all waited on our front lawn
He threw the breaker and the lights came on
And we sang Silent Night
Oh Silent Night
Carve the turkey turn the ball game on
Mix margaritas when the eggnog's gone
Send somebody to the Quik-Pak store
We need some ice and an extension cord
A can of bean dip and some Diet Rite
A box of tampons and some Marlboro Lights
Hallelujah everybody say cheese
Merry Christmas from the family
Carve the turkey turn the ballgame on
Make Bloody Marys cause we all want one
Send somebody to the Stop 'n Go
We need some celery and a can of fake snow
A bag of lemons and some Dite Sprite
A box of tampons and some Salem Lights
Hallelujah everybody say cheese
Merry Christmas from the family
Feliz Navidad

I'm not surprised - I was actually stunned to hear that a school was having a Christmas play. After all, GCS worships at the altar of multiculturalism.

Shawn,

I don't think this incident had anything to do with skin color, this was an ignorant act.....just like your comments.

Shawn said:

Allen, all I can say is, watch the tape.

Watch, as the only people fighting are black people.

Watch as the non blacks view this event in horror, holding their children, shaking their heads in disbelief.

I can only call it as I see it.

Just like the vibe awards. Just like NBA fights that roll into the stands. Just like the numerous riots over the years. Just like the fights that break out BEFORE boxing matches. Just like the Jena 6. And on and on. Violence is all blacks know. True, it is 99% percent of the time on one another, but it is violence nonetheless.

You just cannot have blacks together in too large a quantity. The tribe mentality breaks out, and you have a melee. No straight thinking, the inner thug comes flying out.

Deny this if you like, but this would NEVER happen between a group of white parents. Never. Even white trash have respect for what their kids see and experience. Do white parents argue and fight at sporting events? Absolutely. And what do the other parents do? They make him leave. They shame him, they tell their kids its wrong.

What do blacks do? They all join in and have a slugfest because "somebody "dissed their bitch".

Like I said, its an animal mentality. Call it racist, call it bigotry, call it whatever you like. The facts speak for themselves.

Black folks in groups are a problem waiting to happen.

Anonymous said:

Its not color its poverty. It just so happens that in this County its the Black part of our society that makes up a high percenatge of our poor.

To break this circle of poverty we need strong black people with good morals to be role models for our children. Dr Childs of the school board said that the Grimsley childen fought because they dont have the same things that white children have. That is probably one of the most irresponsible things that I have ever heard.

This kind of attitude will never break the circle. It just gives the kids the excuse to keep doing wht they do and go straight to jail.

Myron Johnson said:

Shawn,

I probably shouldn't waste my time but for those ignorant people who think as you do I will respond. Again, this fight was an act of ignorance, just like the many acts of hooliganism that take place at soccer games and stadiums all over Europe . I would be the true example of a "ugly American" if I said that pigment of one's skin color causes one to be a hooligan.

Anonymous said:

Shawn, The title of this blog says teach your children well.

Please dont teach your children the way that you think! This attitude puts you lower than the parents that fought at Oak View.

Much Lower!

just saying said:

This isn't a racial issue - it's a behavior issue. This type of behavior is unacceptable regardless of the race of people involved.

And, yes, white folks have been known to commit acts of senseless violence, too, as have people of all races, colors and nationalities.

Besides, it looked to me from the video that one of the women involved in the Oak Hill fight is white. Not that it matters to anyone but Shawn.

Anonymous said:

Youre right, this IS a behavior issue. The behavior of black folks is unacceptable and it is time that the leaders (snicker..snicker..) in the black community stand up and tell their bruthas thay they are embarassing them. Tell them to stop burning down their own neighborhoods. Stop killing each other and that its not ok to take someones life because they feel like it. Stop blaming the man for your problems, and be men yourselves.

Honestly, its not MY problem. And also to be honest, I could give a rats a## what they do to one another. Burn your own neighborhoods, noone really cares. BUT...and theres that word, when your savagery spreads to my world, be fully aware, my government wont allow it. You will be caged in your own slums and treated like the animals you portray.

Do you know why riots stay in poor black neighborhoods? Because:

A) Noone cares. Its just blacks affecting blacks.

B) The authorities would never allow riots to spread to white, middle to upper class neghborhoods. Blacks know it, so they destroy their own ghettos.

Did you see what happened in New Orleans when the influx of garbage tried to cross into the next county over? The answer was a clear and resounding "turn around or be shot".

Why must white america control the black population and tell them what is right and wrong? I know why, its simple.

There arent any strong fathers telling their kids "hey dummy, dont do that". Its left to us. The black kids have been abandoned by their trash fathers (79% at last census), so the job is left up to us.

The blame can be left where its easier, on us, or can be addressed at home, where it should be. Black men are weak, irresponsible breeders with no thought or consience as to what they are creating, its just gimme, gimme, gimme some tail.

Those parents fighting were BLACK parents, no matter what that other posts thinks they saw. Once again, I ask, does it really surprise you they were?

Answer that honestly, and you'll have your directive.
