Fecund threat
As Amanda Lehmert reports, a local blogger has performed the cyber-equivalent of washing his mouth with soap.
Jeff Martin, aka Fecund Stench online, altered a post about City Councilman Robbie Perkins and his family after Greensboro police investigated it as a threat.
Martin originally had posted that he wanted to "ruin Robbie Perkins' life and "strike fear in his heart for himself, his family, property and livelihood." The post included a map to Perkins' home.
Ha. Ha. What a hoot.
Martin has since recast the post, writing that he represents "no threat" to the personal safety of "Perkins and the unfortunate people who are related to him."
What a funny guy, even in the face of a call from the law.
This recalls another blogger, who threatened to blow up the downtown civil rights museum in a comment posted to the News & Record's letters blog two years ago.
He was contrite after a visit from the SBI, and apologized in a blog comment.
Neither man meant any real harm. And bloggers are, by nature, irreverent and, in many cases, over the top. Or least they try to be. But attempts at wit or humor by communicating threats are inappropriate and immature -- and can get you into big trouble.

Too bad for Fecund Stench he isn't a gang leader. N&R story:
Local Blogger/Gangster Renounces Violence
In a gesture reminiscent of Christ, local blogger and gang leader Fecund Stench enjoined his followers Monday to renounce violence against city councilman Robbie Perkins. Although he refused to forswear all criminal activity, Stench affirmed that he represents "no threat" against Perkins.
Local minister Nelson Johnson praised Stench. "Like Gandhi, Stench has chosen to follow the path of non-violence." Johnson also had harsh words for the Greensboro police department, which had contacted Fench after an earlier online threat. "When will these Gestapo tactics stop?," Johnson asked.
Please tune in tomorrow for another hagiographical account of Stench's conformity to the normal expectations of civilized society.

So Allen. You/the N&R staff knew this "threat" was bogus. You knew it was Fec being Fec (albeit way over-the-top . . . but he's been way over-the-top before). Yet you reported it as "news".
I wonder. Did Converge South's Sue Polinski have anything to do with getting the police involved?
Why don't you investigate that and get back to the blogging "community" your paper once courted?
There's a fecund stench here for sure - the same smell that wafts through the ether every time JR talks about "citzen journalism".

Blow it out your ear.

Mary:
Yes. I would consider it newsworthy when police investigate bloggers who make personal threats. Wouldn't you?

Allen it wasn't any kind of real "threat" and you KNOW it.
Let's look at it from another perspective. I've been in the GSO blogosphere for three years - at JR's invitation (I've since been banned at his blog for criticizing his job performance). I've been jumping and and down - screaming for help - telling the absolute, God's honest TRUTH about CRIMES committed against me (as a doctor in public service) by local hospital administrators - who behave much like some of the "right people" Fec declared "war" against. The N&R doesn't consider any of that "newsworthy" - even though time and the Medical Board have proven me to be very credible with regards to the medical/ethical matters about which I blog.
You blew off the Edwards story too. Speaks volumes about your judgment.
FYI, I'd LOVE to have the SBI at my door - I've got quite a story for them. Perjury. Contempt. Fraud.
You/the N&R are sending the clear message that the ONLY way for an ordinary sap to get attention is to pull a Fec (no offense to Fec because he is gifted writer and brilliant satirist - you know that too - but that scares you).
You didn't answer the question. Was Sue involved with this? Because if she did light this fire, and (speaking of blogger codes of conduct) if there's a line that you don't cross, she just did.

Good Lord, you used me as a verb. lol.
Look folks, there are no conspiracies here. Sue doesn't have any power.
I screwed up and didn't properly apologize. I don't plan to be at the Perkins Xmas party. Big deal.

You did screw up, Fec. But I appreciate your comment. The point is that threats should not be a plaything.
Mary, this was a story but not a huge story and appropriately was played inside the paper, not on a section front.

Fec, I'm defending you. Would you cut me some slack? ;)
Yes, I used you as a verb. Was it good for you?
No Sue doesn't have any power. But if you don't have anything nice to say about her, come sit by me.
Again Allen, the ONLY "threat" was an imaginary one. If the reporters at the N&R didn't know it, the "bloggers" most certainly did. And, as much as you would like to downplay it, the story was featured front-page online (no doubt to rub it in the nose of the bloggers you were sending your message to - we'll have to disagree on the conspiracy theory, Fec). I come from the land of Jack Perdue, and having been on the receiving end one too many times, I don't like it when people abuse their power.
The Edwards story wasn't a story until it was a story.
And my story still isn't a story.
