Black & White and hopeful all over
My significant other and I are heading (late) tonight to the second annual Black and White Ball at Grandover that supports the International Civil Rights Center and Museum.
We had a blast last year and were encouraged by all the good folks who turned out.
Hope to see you there.

Obviously, I'm not the kind of person who gets invited to black tie affairs at Grandover (I can't even afford to play golf there), but I gotta ask,
What International Civil Rights Center and Museum? At what point does that hypotheticial entity become a pseudo-rationale for annual black tie affairs? Do the funds raised go to the creation of the Center, or to the staffing budget for fundraising efforts to buy advertising to persuade the public to support a bond that will provide funds to create the Center?
(The question will suggest, correctly, that I have concluded something like the latter.)

I'm not sure precisely where the proceeds will go but I will find out.
I don't go to a lot of black-tie affairs either (my tuxedo was a rental) but we had a ball (no pun intended).

That was me above. I'm very disappointed to hear that you don't own a tux. It ruins my image of you.
If the Center ever does open, I hope they take to heart the approach to historiography outlined in the very good Filene article yesterday. In Glenn Chavis, the N&R has an excellent oral historian: I wish you guys would put him in the ed pages on occasion.

Brian:
I'd love to occasionally run Glenn Chavis on the op-ed pages. But I'd have to negotiate with the news follks about that.

I went to a black-tie affair for the museum not long ago, after which I wrote a newspaper column supporting the museum, and voicing my hope that future events would reach out to a wide audience, so that the folks who do make a habit of going to benefits would show up.
Your blog post is the first I heard of the recent event.
Seems to me there's a marketing problem.

I'm not sure how it was promoted, Ed. Frankly, I hadn't heard very much about it except through colleagues.
Maybe they could ramp up the publicity.
In any event, there was a strong turnout.

Geez, if they were too snooty to invite Ed Cone, it must have been a distinguished crowd.

Brian:
You really ought to do stand-up. As for the publicity effort, I was just out on High Point Road and saw a huge billboard advertising the ball.

An update:
Sorry I haven't reported yet on how much money the event raised. I hope to have something today.
It's been a hectic week.
