Hagan/Dole (cont.)
More Hagan-Dole aftershocks:
This, from the Rev. J. George Reed, executive director, North Carolina Council of Churches:
Dear Senator Dole:
We are writing to deplore as strongly as possible your recent thirty-second television advertisement and the extended but similar piece from the National Republican Senatorial Committee, suggesting that your opponent is “godless” and concluding with the words “There is no God,” which the viewer could easily believe are being spoken by Sen. Hagan. As you no doubt know, Sen. Hagan is a faithful and active member and leader in the First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro. To say or even to suggest that that outstanding congregation has chosen a lay leader who doesn’t believe in God is appalling and should be offensive to churches and church leaders throughout the state. And, as we learned from this morning’s News & Observer, other participants at the “godless” fundraiser in question included Sen. John Kerry, whose membership in the Roman Catholic Church is pretty well known, and Ambassador Swanee Hunt, who began her theological studies at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville and graduated from the Iliff School of Theology in Denver, a United Methodist seminary.
The North Carolina Council of Churches does not endorse or oppose candidates for political office, and neither you nor Sen. Hagan should construe this letter as taking a position about the outcome of your race. The Council has, however, called for greater civility in political discourse, and we cannot remain silent when you challenge the beliefs of faithful fellow Christians and suggest that a leader in one of the state’s oldest and largest denominations doesn’t believe in God.
Sincerely,
Rev. Sèkinah Hamlin
President, North Carolina Council of Churches
Rev. J. George Reed
Executive Director, North Carolina Council of Churches
And this from a commenter at Your Voice at the Table.
I'm not American so perhaps I have no right to comment, but this is bizarre. It's a bit like what Colin Powell said about the Obama-Muslim lies. The correct answer is that he isn't a Muslim. The really correct answer is, what if he is? It sounds like Hagan has proved to be a Christian beyond reasonable doubt. The sickness is that people care. Isn't America supposed to be the land of religious freedom, including (if you so choose) freedom from religion?

Allen, the North Carolina Council of Churches is an association comprised of liberal churches-- like the one Hagan attends.
The position of liberal churches on church/state separation issues tends to be fairly similar to that advocated by the Godless Americans PAC.
I have never perceived that the original ad Dole ran alleged Hagan is Godless. I think that is a false issue.
But the ad did raise legitimate questions as to why folk(s) associated with that PAC found Hagan's candidacy so appealing.

This is just more of the same from the liberal editor of the N&R. When Jeremiah Wright was "introduced to us" as Obama's preacher of 20 years, his mentor, the one who baptized Obama's children, and quite obviously had a great influence on Mrs. Obama, the tactic of the editor of the N&R was to bring some minsiter named hagee, I believe, someone whose church McCain did not sit in for 20 years, nor did he say similar vile things about America, but attempted to make a moral equivalence. Hagee merely endorsed McCain, just like Hamas endorsed Obama. Journalism has become a joke, and this once honorable profession is no longer that. If Hagan were a Republican this would be a non-story, or the media would Hagan supported Hagan. By the way, what is this Church Elder, Christian woman's position on killing innocent unborn children up to the time of birth!

So why won't Hagan answer questions about this instead of just attacking the person who brought it to light?
Why was Hagan there?
Who invited Hagan?
Who arranged Hagan's transportation, etc.?
How much money did Hagan receive?
What did Hagan promise these people to get their invite?
And why has Hagan refused to answer questions about this if it was all on the up-and-up?

is there any truth to the rumor that Kay's new ad will switch the Oz allegory about Liddy from Dorothy to the Wicked Witch, along with a voice-over from Allen and JR stating "We approved this ad"?

Allen, you have a low threshold for "aftershock." I'd put the NCCOC letter at the shock level of its latest pronouncement on the relative value of human souls and snail darters. (From the NCCOC, I'd expect roughly a 1:1 ratio, the equation depending on their both being "infinitely precious in the eyes of God.")
The letter from the outside party makes, in fairly predictable terms, the charge that other people are basing their votes on the wrong thing. In its particular application, I'm in agreement: I don't care much about a candidate's religion, and would prefer to learn as little about it as possible. (Similarly, I'm in total agreement with Allen's suggestion that there are many other--and far better--reasons not to vote for Hagan.)
But if America is "supposed to be the land of religious freedom," it is actually the land of political freedom in this precise sense: you can vote for a candidate based on any reason you choose, including a candidate's religion, charisma, moose-hunting practices, or tax policy.
Personally, I think candidates should be evaluated on whether they support or oppose a nanny state that infantilizes its citizenry and rewards incompetence and sloth through wildly inefficient practices of theft and redistribution. You may have different criteria. The reality is that there's no way to adjudicate these differences except through concrete votes.
And on that score, Hagan's rather hysterically theological response--by "questioning my strong Christian faith," she says, Dole has been a bad Christian "bearing false witness against her neighbor"--concedes that Dole has identified an issue that might potentially move voters. The "really correct answer" ("so what if I did meet with a Godless American?") does not seem, for Hagan, to have been "really correct."
To reiterate: (1) Other people are unbelievably stupid and vote for the wrong reasons, and (2) that's democracy.

The NCC is a left wing liberal group, so I am not surprised that a left wing liberal newspaper, would use them as a source of information! Hagan went there to collect money.
Shame you do not focus on Hagan, voting record in Raleigh.
Allen, where the out cry on Obama ad picturing woman as airheads? He pulled this same crap with Ms. Clinton.
Seems I have heard that Muslims look at woman as second class people, I wonder if there is a connection?
Must be you are to busy, trying to make us think Palin does porn films.

Allen, can you take five minutes to listen to Hagan's radio interview?
It's found by clicking here.
I'm sure it embarrasses and breaks the hearts of the Hagan Cheerleading Squad at the N&R to hear their sweet Kay so befuddled and unable to answer simple questions.
Tell me Allen, why can't Hagan answer the questions she's asked in this interview?

Personal beliefs aside, I don't think that I would ever be so sophomoric in thinking that I would meet with and/or take money from a group with "godless" in their name. Seems to be a really, really bad judgment call, especially here in the Bible Belt.
"I know what I was feeling, but what was I thinking?"

Upon further review! The NCC has close ties with the communist party. Kay Hagan is against people having property rights. Jump right in Mark, tell us she did not give us a speech on this! Communist are against people owning property. Does this make Hagan a communist?
Of course the sad thing is after a clean sweep Tuesday by the liberals, the NR will have nothing to write about, unless they can find some poor old republican dog catcher some were to beat up on.
Brian you are right there are many reason to vote aginst Hagan, sorry most voters do not read the facts about her.

Upon even further review. Hagan went to Boston to be with the atheist, all they wanted was for her to take the money and get the word GOD out of the Pledge of Allegiance.
