See no evil
Leonard Pitts wonders in his column today how 50 people could witness a shooting at a public park and not have seen who fired the gun.
I wonder how 700 people could be present during a shooting in a packed Greensboro movie theater and not have seen who fired the shots.
You do the math.

I'll do the math, but I'm not sure what it'll mean. Let's see, 700 divided by 50 equals 14. Is the no-snitching culture 14 times stronger in Greensboro than in Miami?
On the other hand, in Greensboro 700 people "failed" to see who shot and wounded one person, while in the incident in Pitts' column, 50 people failed to see who shot nine people, killing two. Maybe the less serious the crime, the stronger the no-snitching culture?

Andrew:
I didn't literally mean do the math. I just wanted to point out that part of ending the cycle of violence is telling what you know.
It possibly could be that none of those folks at the theater saw anything, but that seems unlikely.
Also, shouldn't the victim have gotten a good look at him?

Maybe the victim is peacefully following the peaceful no-snitching code of local peace activist Jorge Cornell.

As strange as this may sound, I watch a man steal a tv in Sam's Club, just before Christmas.
I was so busy laughing at the lady at the door. The only thing I could swear to, is a man stole a tv. So maybe these people were like me.
Not saying they were laughing, something else may have distracted them.
I told a retired police officer that, the next day.
He told me this was common.

Allen: Dude, it was a joke, sort of. Or rather an attempt to be witty. Apparently it was a poor attempt.

Well, I'm kinda slow late at night.

What is more comical than reading an exchange between two liberals, Allen and Andrew, who is a liberal "denier" despite the myriad of written evidence in this "moderate" publication.
At least now we know why Allen was so enamored with the "Messiah." He didn't understand that the "Messiah's" campaign was a joke, as were're now finding out.
How many tax cheats does it take to fill a "new kind of politician's" cabinet!

Tony, what does this have to do with the gun violence problems in Greensboro?
Posted on February 5, 2009 11:23 AM
Not surprising at all.
In many communities ('hoods) it's best not to be a witness to anything.
I suspect many of the moviegoers came from such neighborhoods.

Allen You asked a serious question and received ridiculous replies. Here is another. My theory is that a movie actor was present with bodyguards. Two Greensboro police cruisers were circling the outside, three hired by theather security guards were checking out the 700 paid for ticket holders that heard balloons pop and seconds later two gunshots blew out the stomach of a young man. This whole thing can smell like oily fish, or the gunman with the weapon that attended a movie is stopped. Two to one bodyguard shots, or three to one local revenge, nine to one idiot in a crowded room spooked by popping balloons, probably a crack head out the see a movie that should have rented the DVD. The sadness is nobody saw anything. I have been in crowds packed into small places larger than 700 humans. If the guy next to me got his gut shot out I certainly would have noticed. Christine

Gang Related...
I heard it on good authority that the actor who played "Biggie" was throwing up gang signs right before the "popping" began. Nobody seems to have "seen" it, but that sure makes sense that balloons poppin' and caps bustin' could follow this type of behavior. You say there were body guards there? Hmmm...
When is the N&O going to tell us where the Gang Unit of the GPD was that night? Not that it would tell us who "saw" anything, this is an entirely different issue, but an important part of this whole nightmare.
Was the victim in a gang? Does anybody know? Does anybody care? If he was it surely wouldn't diminish the fact that he got shot, but it might explain WHY him, out of 700 people.
I would like to do some research on this "Gang Unit" of the GPD. Got any good links? I am very curious about them and what exactly it is that they do. Only because I pay their salary.
If they weren't at this theatre when this very very very obviously gang related type movie opened (yes, East Coast v. Westtsiiide) then what were they doing? Where were they?
Something indeed smells fishy.... or maybe like fresh money. Cuz, it's all about the Binjaman's baby... Mo' Money.. Mo' Money...

Sadly, the incident at the theater is a reflection of the "Stop snitchin'" culture that seems to have rooted itself in the inner city. Even one of our elected officials, Deena Hayes, has encouraged young people to not cooperate with police. Remember that?
And on an unrelated note, has anyone really confirmed that the actor who played Biggie Smalls was in the theater at the time? It seems odd that 1. He would be in Greensboro at all; 2. There wouldn't have been any advance publicity; and 3. The media wouldn't have been there already to cover his appearance.

The only way there would not have been actual witnesses to something like this is if it was a planned/ pre-meditated ambush. You could easily have a gun concealed underneath a coat or in a pocket and shoot somebody in a large crowd of people and be ten ft. away from the victim before anybody in the room knew anything.
If it was some type of passion crime there would have been an antecedent argument which would have attacted attention and created multiple witnesses who still my not testify due to fear.

The actor was infact there yes. Why no publicity? No idea. Why in Greensboro? No idea. Sounded weird to me too, but kind of made sense after I heard of the shooting..... (Do you follow me?)
This actor guy was allegedly throwing up gang signs. (reportedly seen by GPD at the Theatre)
Balloons popped.
Somebody got shot.
Nobody saw anything.

I'm surprised at how passive the local media has been in covering this story. A guy gets shot in a crowd of 700 people at a movie with the star of the film in attendance (I'm still not sold on that, by the way). Weeks later, the shooter remains at large, as police don't even have a suspect.
It seems to me that this is big news. But after the first-day reports, I've barely seen anything. If this is what local journalism has come to in the era of corporate downsizing, then we are all the poorer for it.
And this isn't a knee-jerk "bash the N&R" comment at all. No other media outlet has picked up the ball, either. I guess the Rhino reporters are too busy taking pictures of drunk girls for the "chick of the week" page to be bothered with real news.

justsaying:
While there may be no direct evidence that a single person can present to you that the star of the film was in fact there, it makes sense that he was there, in light of the shooting. (to me at least)
Why Greensboro? Maybe he had "business" here and took care of it?
Posted on February 6, 2009 4:50 PM
Then there is the question of the victim. Why him?
What was the motive, If this wasn't a random incident?
Posted on February 9, 2009 7:50 AM
Allen, only the shadow knows.
What do we know about the victim anyway?

Here is what I believe about whether or not anyone saw anything: I believe that many people saw something, but, sadly, for the majority of the people at the movie, they would rather HURT the police more (by not telling on gangsters) than HELP their community by getting creeps off the street. This kind of thing won't stop until they LOVE their children more than they HATE the police and the White establishment.
