Tennis anyone?
It seems that the long-delayed opening of Greensboro's indoor public tennis facility has been delayed again. This time, the courts at the Simkins Indoor Sports Pavilion have too much of an outside flavor. Ann Rolke explains in an email to council members:
"As I understand it, there are so many leaks in the metal roof at Simkins that the courts are unusable when it rains. This is RIDICULOUS!!!!"
Mary Dean relates to the council what she was told by a parks official:
"He described a tournament that was moved indoors to Barber park awhile ago where they attempted to continue play while people scrambled court to court to sop up water as it leaked from the brand new roof that Greensboro has paid for. Obviously the facility is unusable... players could be injured if they attempted to play on a new court with water puddling from a leaky roof. Apparently the problem is a lack of action on the part of the roofer to repair these leaks?"
Tennis enthusiasts bombarded the council and city officials with similar complaints. Parks & Recreation director Bonnie Keuster said the construction was still under warranty and that the contractor was working on fixing the leaks. The roof replaces the old plastic bubble over the courts that collapsed in an ice storm. The project was originally supposed to be done a year ago.
