Weed Be Gone
High Point's Pig Pen property owners beware.
In 2005, owners of lots that are overgrown with foot-high weeds and populated with trash piles could pay dearly.
The city is looking to beef up its public nuisance code and crack down on properties that create eyesores throughout High Point.
The new ordinance includes civil fines of up to $100 for not correcting a violation by a city set deadline. Property owners could also face another $25 a day for as long as the mess remains.
The city is also proposing a "three strikes your out" policy for frequent offenders. A property owner is allowed up to three citations in one year. After that, the city can move without notice to correct any violations within the next year.
The city could mow your overgrown lawn without notice, and then send you the bill.
A council committee approved the changes to the city's code, including the fines earlier this month.
The council will meet on Tuesday at 4:45 p.m. at city hall to make its recommendations.
