County salaries, here and far away

Scoop figures its readers want to know how much their elected officials earn compared to politicos in other parts of the state.

Enter the UNC School of Government, which has published salaries and travel expenses for county employees throughout North Carolina, including county commissioners.

View the full report here.

According to the report, Guilford commissioners make $14,700 plus a $1,500 travel allowance (chairman Bruce Davis earns $18,300 plus travel).

That's less than what officials take home in other large counties like Mecklenburg, Forsyth and Cumberland, and close to commissioners' compensation in Wake County.

Note the salaries in some of the smaller counties. Commissioners in Gates County (pop. 10,708) make $300 annually, plus $25 for each meeting.

That GOOD entertainment value. Where else can you see Jerry Springer show contestants? (Jerry's guests are reportily paid $300, plus travel.)

If the County Commissioners acted like County Commissioners of Mecklenburg County, then I could see paying them like professionals.

Mr Bruce Davis is overpaid if you look at his mental ability.

OK, I can't believe Rockingham County is paying its county exec that much money. For doing what? Last time I was there (and admittedly this was back in '97), there was a struggling mall, one movie theater, a drive-in (which was kinda cool), no public transportation, and the one coffee spot (in Reidsville) closed due to lack of interest. In my mind, the county exec doesn't just run the day to day business of the county, he goes out and recruits businesses to the area that in turn will bring in more taxpayers so that you can improve roads and provide more amenities. I mean, the Rockco county exec makes darn near as much as the man running MeckCo. What a boondoggle!
