For Discussion

House Bill 1006 is headed to a vote after getting a unanimous recommendation by the State Government committee today.

The bill, co-sponsored by Greensboro Democrat Rep. Earl Jones, would require companies doing business with the state to search their records for evidence that they profited from slavery. The company would then certify that they couldn't find evidence that they participated in the slave trade or disclose documents showing they had.

Jones said the bill was modeled on a similar California law that led insurance companies to acknowledge their involvement in slavery. The goal, Jones said, would be to prompt those companies to either make apologies or prompt them to donate to or participate in local nonprofits that benefit the African American community. However, the bill doesn't require any specific sort of redress.

There's no Senate version of the bill yet.

Great, a shake-down bill for people that have nothing to do with what the company they work for may have done 139 years ago. They don't have anything to apologize about. The people that should apologize are in the ground. Does representative Jones have any idea how stupid this is? Did he get help from Jesse Jackson to write the bill?
This is just the kind of thing that will attract business to NC. Way to go, Rep. Jones ...

How stupid can a person be.

Yup Michael & tax payer, I agree. I never owned slaves.. neither did anyone in my bloodline. Not ALL white people were fortunate enough back in the day to own much of anything, much less a slave. Once black people realize this, then maybe, MAYBE we can move on. Rep. Jones is not REPRESENTING me. I will remember this next election. Between Jones bright idea, and Skip Alson interrogating new businesses who want to relocate here about how many black people they have on staff and in what management positions.. ie: the citi-corp thing.. its a wonder anyone would even consider Greensboro as an option to locate to.

Just when you thought that you have heard it all. People keep talking about how racist the whites are but who is actually the racist here? What difference does slavery actually have on todays society. There is not one person alive that has lived through it. Anyway, history states that they was sold in the first place by their own people. Brought to this country on the northern owned slave ships. Lincoln stated that the war was over money in the first place. The only reason for the emancipation proclomation was so he had a chance for re-election. Back to the point, this is just another way for these two to fuel the hatred among the people of this city. One more point, WE ALL HAVE OUR HERITAGE, it is kindof like religeon, what makes mine right and yours wrong. We are told that in society we should not allow discrimination against no one, no matter what color they are or sexual preference, religeon or whatever. Im done now. HERITAGE NOT HATE

Thanks for the comments all. Is there anyone out there in cyber-land that thinks this is a good idea? I think we've heard pretty clearly from the "no" side.

Well from the looks of the poll....looks like more of the people have their heads on their shoulders like it is supposed to be.

The previous commentators have made good points. This is undoubtedly the most frivolous and asinine use of lawmaker's time and taxpayer dollars that I can imagine. Let us not forget that the United States did not invent slavery; the institution had existed for millenia before slaves were brought to our shores. We are, however the country that ENDED slavery (which still exists in many other parts of the world). Slavery in the U.S. ended in the 19th century. We are now in the 21st century and it is time to let go of the ridiculous notion that any person or entity existing today owes reparations ('prompting large companies to contribute to organizations....')for something in which they took no part. I certainly intend to contact lawmakers about this clear attempt to open the door to extortion of money from businesses to line the pockets of special interests and. I hope many more alert citizens will do the same.

The website for the NC General assembly is http://www.ncga.state.nc.us . From here, you can contact your representative(s) to express your opinion.

By the way, what about the Native Americans?
