Workforce study update

Consultants from Greensboro-based The Herman Group preparing a study on workforce preparedness in High Point should have their final report ready in mid-October. The purpose is to provide a snapshot of the preparedness level of the city's workforce versus the skills needed by employers.

But in meeting with an oversight committee for the study Monday, the consultants had a couple of interesting things to say...

Along with gathering mounds of data, the consultants have interviewed around 50 people and conducted four focus groups for the project.

One of the questions asked in all those sessions is whether city residents are prepared for the jobs of today and tomorrow. The resounding answer has been "no," said Mark Livingston, a vice-president with The Herman Group and the study's project manager.

Livingston said he's heard a lot of frustration from human resources managers that it's getting harder to find or train people to have basic skills like reading, writing, computation and teamwork. They can be found, Livingston said, but it's taking longer and longer to find those qualified people.

Who will be privy to this "final report"?

Eric Swensen said:

The final report will be made public, likely at a meeting of the High Point Economic Development Corp. board of directors.

When the report is released, I'm sure we'll have a story on it; ideally, we can get a copy of the full report posted online.

Thanks Eric,

A copy of the full report on-line would be great.
