More items from Tuesday's council briefing

My story in today’s paper about Tuesday's City Council briefing session focuses on council’s reaction to the proposed Agapion property purchase, but that wasn’t the only item discussed.

The director of the city’s environmental services department, Jeryl Covington, talked about some coming rate changes for the city’s garbage collection service. The city now charges a flat monthly fee of $116.50 for commercial garbage collection, regardless of the type of garbage placed in dumpsters.

As part of the department’s budget request for 2006-07, environmental services will unveil three separate rates – one for dry garbage, one for wet garbage and one for compacted garbage. Covington didn’t disclose the new rates Tuesday. Assuming council approves the rate changes as part of next year’s budget , they won’t take effect until July 2006.

The environmental services department also plans to coordinate the rental and maintenance of dumpsters, which will be provided by a private company. The city’s commercial-waste customers now rent their dumpsters from private companies, but have to pay separate bills for waste collection and dumpster rental/maintenance. Customers will have all their charges located on a single bill and will be able to call the environmental services department to rent a dumpster or have it repaired.

You may have seen Richard Barron’s story in Sunday’s paper about revitalization plans for a portion of South Elm Street. Council learned at its briefing that the development strategy for the area will be finalized in January, and a draft redevelopment plan will be completed in February or March.
