One of the two Republicans in Tuesday's primary in Winston-Salem's Southwest ward said yesterday that he is dropping out of the race after the Winston-Salem Journal raised questions about where he lives.

David Crawford, 40, said he could not meet the election's residency require-ment.

The address that he gave to the Forsyth County Board of Elections on Vest Mill Road was his former business address.

He acknowledged yesterday that he has no permanent address and that he was not aware of the rules that require a candidate for office to live in the ward that he intends to represent.

"Even though I'm living in Winston, on the streets basically, I have to have a physical address," he said. "I don't really have that."

... Crawford, a self-employed computer technician and a senior vice president with Sigla Furniture Co. in High Point, had been making his first run for public office.

Crawford had campaigned on a conservative platform, saying that he wanted to see city taxes on businesses lowered.

... Crawford's decision to drop out will not save taxpayers any money.

Kathie Chastain Cooper, Forsyth County's director of elections, said that ballots with Crawford's name on them have already been printed.

As a result, six precincts will have to remain open solely for that race, she said.

It will likely cost several thousand dollars to pay for rent and for the three judges that the law requires to be at each precinct in a primary.

Roch, official filing doesn't begin until July 6, but Crawford told me he's filed some paperwork with the Guilford County Board of Elections. I haven't checked on that yet.

The W-S Journal articles identifies Crawford as 40 years old in 2005. On his MySpace profile, Crawford says he is 31.

Given his obvious CApitalizAtion issues, I would say perhaps he was schooled at the knee of The Chairman.

I decided to run for City Council in greensboro in 2009 because I'm tired of business as usual. There's talk and no action. There's "I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine." Money is spent on self-interested or just plain stupid projects. For example, we do not have money to hire more police officers, but we're spending money to tear up a side walk? That is very contrary to my good sense. It's my belief that money HAS to be spent based on priorities established beforehand. When I'm out walking the district, the number one issue concerning residents is public safety. These people would much rather have their tax dollars spent on keeping their city safe. I know I would! My motivation for running for City Council is to give a voice to people with good old fashion common sense ideals. The people I talk to on a daily basis that tell me they will vote for me because I have the passion, vision, and good sense to lead this City in the right direction is my motivation It is amazing how people can run for political office and get elected to represent the community without a fundamental understanding of urban planning. My personal education came at a tremendous cost, is it my job to educate others? It is indeed my Godly obligation to share knowledge with those who inquire. However, it is initially difficult to refrain from scolding those in key decisional positions who are ignorant of the foundational roll transportation plays in urban development. For years, the city has been talking about rebuilding our infrastructure. However, when it comes down to making a decision, they go back to the same "tear it down and build it back up" tactics. We need to do what we originally planned to do, start putting money into fixing up that part of the city & I believe it's time for a real person to represent the residents of the city. If people want that sixty year old business man on the city council, then I'm not your guy. But if you want someone that's going to be concerned not ONLY about the budget, but also about the livability of our city, then I'm more then qualified. am running for District 4 we have very nice library's, and School's. But This part of the city is a good place to live, has good shopping and restaurants. However, it lacks a museum, Art Gallery, well lit bike lanes, walking trails and sidewalks. This is not an exhaustive list by any means, but it is a quick over view.The downtown needs to be revitalized not just because it will give people something to do, but it will be good for our economy but we also need a museum, Art Gallery out here too!I love the question : how can I apply old fashioned ideals in a postmodern society! This is totally subjective, but I'm referring to a strong work ethic, spending money only when you need to and not just because you can, and putting children first. Obviously children need nurturing for their sake, but children also need nurturing for the sake of our city!Those criminals that are locked up in jail, a vast majority of them had troubled childhoods. Those gang members that we don't want in our neighborhood, they usually come from troubled neighborhoods. These children that went unnutured and ignored by society because we were too busy with out own lives, understandably, grew up and made us too afraid to go downtown or we might get shot. Now I don't fear downtown, but a believe a majority of Greensboro will not go down there after dark until the gang, drug, and crime problem in Greensboro clears up. Do we not rebuild downtown? No. But we ALSO work on afterschool programs and work in the schools and with teenage parents and children of gang members to keep them well educated and on the right path. The Parks and Recreation Department is doing an outstanding job on a small scale. If we do have excess funds, then it should be redirected to their Nationally Recognized Program so that they can help the kids on the waiting list too. I believe our downtown needs the excitment to roll once more and need the additional attractions. There is so many beautiful buildings downtown waiting for a breath of life. By revitizing what already is there will bring more wealth. More jobs, more revenue a complete circle of prosperity.
