No city money for sit-in museum

Here's a copy of Tom Phillips' resolution about denying city funds to the sit-in museum:

"Whereas, in 1993, Sit-In Movement Inc. was formed as a nonprofit organization to raise funds to purchase the FW Woolworth building to renovate and convert the building into a museum to honor the sit-in movement begun on Feb. 1, 1960, and

"Whereas, in spite of raising significant funds, Sit-In Movement Inc. has fallen short of its goals and has asked the City of Greensboro for funding, and

"Whereas, while the City of Greensboro initially provided $225,000 to help the organization get started, the citizens of Greensboro have defeated bond referendums on two occasions that would have provided public funding for the International Civil Rights Center and Museum.

"Therefore be it resolved that the City of Greensboro will not authorize the use of Greensboro tax revenues for the completion of or operation of the International Civil Rights Center and Museum, and

"Be it further resolved that the City of Greensboro encourages its citizens to make private donations to complete this worthwhile project."

As noted in today's story, this doesn't rule out the use of Greensboro's portion of HUD money for the project.

Taxpayers are more than fed up with the 'literally' giving their hard earned money to another 'useless money pit'.
A couple weeks ago (and in last week's morning News-Record)it was noted another $500,000.00 was given to the 'Museum' (that's owned by Jones and Alston) so they could make more payments for a building, and a non-profit organization they own called the "Sit-In Movement", by Gov. Mike Easley who called his 20.7 billion dollar 'budget' Magnificient! Easley further stated that "NO ONE" would be able to get Taxpayers money for 'CONFLICT OF INTEREST' AND this type thing! DUH!
Taxpayers feel this is the exact thing Easley is referring to, but continues to ignore! Wouldn't this be called 'double jeopardy', 'double dipping', 'conflict of interest', along with many other dealings that go along with this type thing since this particular property is in politicians'name and is their "pet-baby"! Taxpayers have noticed a lot of their money being given, oh so freely, to 'politicians' and their 'non-profit friends'

First of all, this is not for a Civil Rights ANYTHING, it's about "I can
take Taxpayers money and you can't do a 'cotton pickin' thing about it!"

The State of North Carolina is and never will be large enough nor with
enough "culture" that certain GC Commissioners keeps talking about. About 75% of our area know absolutely nothing about culture-never have, never will! Culture is not based on the color of your skin. It comes from years of teaching from a good, solid, and stable home environment! Principles, morals, and respect come along with accepting responsibility and not by blaming others for what you've created for yourselves!

My God, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that you, as my Grandmom used to
say, "CAN'T TAKE A SAL'S EAR AND MAKE IT INTO A SILK PURSE!"

Amen, sister.

Give me $50K for renovation costs + $20K for my time, and I'll have that bad boy up and running in two weeks - max.

Anyone in these parts who is sick of such money pits and knows how to walk into a home improvement store to buy paint can figure out the solution to this one.

Heck, I'll do it for charity.

Of course that means I'll have to add more than a few zeros to the above quoted figures for my time and decorating skills.

Nevertheless, the taxpayers will still save millions and get a Civil Rights Museum, pronto.

Since it is being billed as the "International Civil Rights Museum," why aren't the international community assisting in the funding of this project? Just because Skip and Earl are black, that doesn't qualify as international. Their governing board are made up of community leaders, that doesn't make it international. Does it?
What is the difference between the Sit-In Movement, and the International Civil Rights Museum, interpretationa and involvement with this project?
I totally agree with Councilman Tom Phillips resolution. READ HIS RESOLUTION...NO MORE TAXPAYERS DOLLARS!!
