Don't bring your guns to council

There's a new level of security at Greensboro's city hall.

Tonight, I had to open up my bags to be checked by security before I could enter council chambers. Security folks said it was the natural progression of things. I guess it has to be, considering what the council has been up against lately.

Mr. Marshburn had NO weapons, Only mace and a bullhorn.

Mace for self defense, he suffers from severe rheumatiod arthritis.

As to the bullhorn...maybe he just wanted to be heard. The council seems deaf to the concerns of citizens against the forced annexation.

Good point.

Let me make it clear. Mr. Marshburn was carrying mace. No guns were found on him that night, in case the headline lead someone to believe otherwise.

But I would quibble with your definition of the word weapon. Mace can incapacitate a person, if only temporarily. At least one state requires people who carry mace to obtain a firearm identification card to do so. Technically speaking, almost anything can become a weapon -- a bat, a foot, a butter knife. It's all a question of use.

But this intellectual debate raises an important question -- a question I will ask the city. Would Mr. Marshburn would have been allowed to carry the mace into the chambers, had he not been arrested? What exactly is the city's definition of weapon?
