Are you ready for some football?

Are you really ready?

If you're a college fan, it's hard to be excited about the prospects for 2004 in North Carolina. N.C. State is the best bet to reach a bowl, probably the only candidate, and it may win eight or nine games just as easily as it could win five. The other ugly ducklings are picked Nos. 9-10-11 in a more difficult league.

And then 61,000 show up for a Panthers preseason game. They're coming off a Super Bowl year, good coach, excellent defense.

Is this a Panthers state, more than a Big Four football state?

Nope, this is a fair weather fan state. The Panthers only get these crowds after nice playoff runs.

More amazing is that Amato continues to sell out games in Raleigh, and lead a huge building campaign, with teams that continue to finish in the middle of the conference.

Yes, NC may be a fair weather state, but at least it has plenty of company. If that is any solace.

In order to keep up with the "new" ACC, UNC should hire Steve Spurrier as football coach. That does not mean that I am a Spurrier fan, but it would be the solution to their football problem.
