USA! USA?
Well, it's finally over. The U.S. men's basketball team held on to beat Greece, 77-71.
I don't know about you, but I've got very mixed feelings about this team. And a whole host of questions.
Such as ...
Do I like this team? Or do I hate it? As an American citizen, should I give it my support? Or as an American citizen, should I be embarrassed by it?
NASCAR fans this must be what it's like to support Tony Stewart. NBA fans, this must be what it's like to follow the Lakers freakshow. NFL fans, this must be what it's like to root for the Dallas Cowboys circus, particularly back in the Michael Irvin era.
You love these teams, because, well, they're your team. But they do things, on an alarmingly regular basis, that leave you soooo frustrated.
So here's my initial question: Should we support this team, because they're our boys? Or should we we root for defeat, hoping that through an international humiliation, the U.S. will go back to playing hoops the right way. With things like, oh, outside shooting, for example?

I posted a comment below that is probably misplaced. I probably should've posted it here. I'd love to see the U.S. sending a team of collegiate athletes that play with heart, even if they lose. I find that I could care less if the current U.S. B-ball team wins or loses. I even find myself hoping that they'll lose just to teach U.S. Basketball a lesson. I do feel sorry for Larry Brown, however.
And wouldn't it be nice to see the U.S. men's Basketball team be referred to as "the U.S. men's Basketball team" rather than "the Dream Team"? It's a bit of a joke these days.

We should always support our athletes no matter what the potential outcome may be from an event. For most of us here in the States, it's easy to criticize and speculate, but we are not on display in front of the entire world like the US athletes. Every team seems to target us not only for our athletic strength, but also on underlying political lines. Even though I feel our team is NOT the best team the US could have fielded, I will still support them and will look to see them bring gold home. Since we here in the US have not stipulated that we will send only the best, we must not complain if we do not get the best in return. GO USA!

I think as Americans we should support this team. It is not their fault as players that they do not have a true point guard on the team, and it is not their fault they do not have a outside shooter. They did not pick this team and the ones to blame know who they are, US committee. We should support them because they are representing us and they are doing the best with what they have.
