It's not what you know ...

I managed to hijack a phone line here thanks to the help of UNCG SID Mike Hirschman, who's here helping run media operations.

Watching N.C. State put the finishing wraps on its come-from-behind victory over Charlotte and I'm struck by three things.

1) Wasn't Charlotte coach Bobby Lutz supposed to be one of the potential replacements for Herb when disgruntled Wolfies had him fired at mid-season.

2) Andrew Brackman can play. I think he works perfectly in this offense. I wonder why his minutes got so low at certain points during the season.

3) I'm betting UConn was hoping Charlotte would win. Facing this State offense when it's clicking - which it certainly is right now - is sort of like running into a football team that excels in the triple option. It's something you don't normally see and it's really hard to prepare for on such a short turnaround.

Maybe a few wins in the tournament will get the fans off Herb's back. He's a good coach, he's just not as much as a personality or as good-looking as some of the others in the ACC. Today you have to have the whole package. Lutz is a good coach, also. His name has been mentioned for the UVa job also.
Good win for the Pack, Herb, and the ACC!

It would be interesting to see if opinions on Herb change if the Wolfpack knocks off U-Conn. But remember this, there were a lot of people grudgingly saying that maybe Sendek could coach a little when State finished second in the conference last year. That didn't help Herb much this season when State was struggling.

I agree with you; I think the 10 seed will haunt him no matter how well they do in the tourney. The money folks want to be in the top three of the conference and in the top 4 seeds of the tournament on a consistent basis. They feel the facilities are in place and there's no reason not to expect that in return.

Who is gr8ful coach? A mystery. Surely not Herb. Not Pete. Probably not Bobby Kn. Dicky V.?

Congratulations, Herb!
Go for that 10 year contract!
