A beautiful 124-degree afternoon

Unrelated to any sports subject in particular, I was wondering if anyone else out there has noticed that the temperature reading atop the JP building in downtown Greensboro seems a tad off in recent weeks.

I couldn't help doing a double-take when I saw a couple of days ago that it was 101 degrees, according to our local insurance company. It felt more like 80. Today feels quite summerlike, but 98??? I don't think so. Jefferson Pilot has apparently moved its official thermometer to Venus.

Hmmm ...

Two things come to mind.

1. Maybe Jefferson Pilot is just trying to throw us off a little bit, remind us they're not AMS-certified meteorologists and encourage us to tune in to the "only complete team" of said-qualified weather people.

2. I don't really know why banks and insurance companies feel the need to have signs that tell us the time and temperature, but I'd guess it has something to do with projecting an image of reliability and trustworthiness. If that's true, then JP better get its temperature right before the masses discover just how trustworthy insurance companies are.
