Butch Davis has non-Hodgkin's lymphoma
Really no need to be witty with that sort of a headline. We'll have a fuller story in tomorrow's paper, but I wanted to get that news out to you faithful readers of the blog.
A few details -The cancer was first discovered when Davis went for a routine dental exam from his dentist in Cleveland. The dentist found a growth which he removed. Pathology tests revealed that it was a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
A later battery of tests revealed that the cancer had not spread. Nonetheless, Davis was advised to undergo chemotherapy. He already had his first round of chemo about a week and a half ago.
Davis was his usual upbeat self and said he does not anticipate that his treatments will affect his job at all. He started coaching spring practice on Monday.

It was quite a shocker when I first heard the news this afternoon, but i'm glad it doesn't appear to be serious for Coach Davis!

Hi John,
While I think the early indications are good for Coach Davis - early detection, no signs that the cancer spread, etc. - I would hesitate to say that this isn't serious. It's cancer and cancer is almost always serious, mainly because - as Davis himself said - there are no guarantees withe cancer. Davis may have seen the last of it completely. Or it might pop up again - in a few months, a few years, etc. You just never know. That's the really insidious thing about it. You can be cancer-free, but you're never really ever free of cancer once you're diagnosed with it.

You are correct on that! I probably should have said as serious. Cancer is one of those things that now will always be a concern for Coach.
