Breaking down the Mighty 9's
Plenty of movement in both Mighty Nine polls this week.
We'll start with my area boys basketball poll first. Dudley's finally taken the game to the hardwood, beating Smith 71-61 Friday and having to squeak out a tight game for that 1-0 start. No. 1 Greensboro Day suffered its first loss, to a Raleigh Ravenscroft team that gave the Bengals some trouble with its size. That's a warning for this weekend, when Christ School's tall timbers come to town. Note that unbeatens Trinity and Page are fast-climbing while Glenn's 9-point loss to East Forsyth leaves the Bobcats on the verge of dropping out.
Here's the full poll, with last week's results, and this week's games listed for each school:

On the girls side, Grimsley, Bishop McGuinness and Rockingham County continue to roll while Northwest has moved into the top 4 after an impressive, if not surprising, 5-0 start. That pushed the Vikings ahead of Page, which fell two spots after losing Friday to Ragsdale. That win moved the Tigers back into the poll.
The Whirlies won impressively over Southeast Guilford, which rebounded to pick up two victories last week and is playing at Rockingham tonight as I write this. That outcome will affect both teams' poll positions significantly. Haley Hackett and the Falcons also have a rematch with Anna Freeman and East Davidson on Wednesday. Should be a good one.
Moving into the poll at No. 8 is Graham, which Southern Alamance coach Sean Quinn raved about after his team fell 71-58 to the 3-0 Red Devils last week. Ragsdale slipped in ahead of Eastern Guilford after splitting with Grimsley and Page. The Wildcats are out, at least for now, after losing to Southwest.
