Muddied bowl picture

If mediocrity can be called dominant, this is the year and the ACC is the league.
Ten of the 12 teams finished league play at 5-3 or 4-4, which means the difference between a championship game spot and total exclusion from postseason play is negligible.
Just ask Wake Forest. If the Demon Deacons had made one more defensive stop against Boston College last week, they'd be Tampa-bound. Now, at 6-5 overall and 4-4 in the league, they're in serious jeopardy of spending the holidays at home with no game to play.
Clemson and N.C. State, both of which appeared dead three weeks ago, qualified for bowls by winning today, and they have given the league 10 candidates for nine spots. Who's out?
The ACC may need to do some politicking in hopes of filling unclaimed spots out of the Pac 10, which will be at least one team short.
