Getting ready for Duke-Purdue

The folks here in West Lafayette, Ind., home of Purdue, are learning about the frenzy around a big basketball game. Tents surround part of Mackey Arena, site of tonight's 9 p.m. contest on ESPN between two of the top teams from the Big Ten and ACC.

This is the first time students have been allowed to camp before a Purdue game. They tried it last year but the administration disallowed it. A compromise was made and students can camp before four Purdue home games this year, but there's a catch. Students can't show up before noon the day before the game.

Students also can't have electricity, fires or heaters. No big deal, right?

Wrong.

The temperature dipped into the low 20s last night. The whipping wind made it feel like it was in the mid teens (stinging any exposed skin) with snow flurries to add to the accumulation the city got the other night. It's not felt much warmer this afternoon. The school newspaper reported that 137 different groups were represented in Purdue's version of tent city.

Students don't seem to mind in order to get a prime seat for what the city's local newspaper around here is calling the biggest non-conference basketball game for Purdue in more than 25 years. One writer compared it to opening night of Mackey Arena _ exactaly 41 years ago today _ when Purdue hosted eventual national champion UCLA and coach John Wooden.

The Purdue fans are ready. The question is if the team will be ready for Duke's challenge.

Coach K praises team; disses Feast Week

A few notes from Duke's 76-60 win Tuesday night at Purdue:

# Mackey Arena was electric before the game _ it was packed 30 minutes before tip-off _ and loud throughout even as the Boilers fell behind. Coach K said such settings are great for teams to experience and grow and then he lamented all the early-season tournament games often played in half-empty (or worse) gyms.

"You would rather play in a gym where people are cheering,'' he said. "That's why I hate Feast Week. There are so many tournaments that nobody goes to. I don't think it's good for our sport to have really good games that nobody is in the stands for. I'd rather have those games on campuses. We can oversaturate college basketball. They didn't even show the stands in most of the tournament games because there was nobody in it. Tonight, I bet they showed the stands. This is what college basketball is about. That's the product we should always be careful about putting out there for the public.''

# Purdue never led, falling behind 7-0 in the opening minutes. A fast start was a point of emphasis for the 8-0 Blue Devils.

"I think it was important for us to get off to a good start,'' Coach K said. "I think (Purdue) was so amped up, not the crowd as much as their team, they did miss a couple of layups right at the start. I think they wanted it so badly.''

Said Jon Scheyer, who tied Kyle Singler with a game-high 20 points: "We knew it was huge to get off to a good start and that's something we were really focused on. Looking back, when we watch the film, we had a couple of chances to really push the lead the first couple of minutes. We didn't really do that but throughout the first half we did make some big plays and push the lead through.''

# Coach K on his team: "I really like this team a lot. I like the fact that they have fun playing. They play really hard. There hasn't been a possession this season that we haven't played hard. We haven't always played intelligently, but we've tried to. They've practiced hard. They've played hard. They've accepted their roles. They've been a really good group to coach.''

# One of the players in accepting his role is senior tri-captain Greg Paulus. A three-year starter, he's now coming off the bench. Certainly that could be tough for any senior and could create issues in the locker room, but Paulus says he's not hung up on the issue: "It's about the team,'' he said. "Me being the captain and the leader on this team. Different guys have little different situations whether it's an injury or a switching of a role, maybe more shots, less shots. I think that we're all putting our hearts into it and trying to get better it. The way that I handle the situation or someone else does as an upperclassman, it sets the tone and builds the culture around here. This is an opportunity for me to do that.''

# A few stats from Tuesday's game:

Duke outrebounded Purdue 49-29. Duke had 16 offensive rebounds to Purdue's 8.

Purdue shot 37.3 percent from the field, the sixth time in eight games Duke has held its foes to less than 40 percent from the field.

One area of concern is Duke's assist-to-turnover ratio. Duke had 12 assists (on 24 field goals) but had 15 turnovers. That's the sixth time this year Duke has had more turnovers than assists. That will catch up with this team in ACC play if it's not corrected.

Kyle Singler's game-high 12 rebounds were just three shy of the total rebounds by Purdue's starting frontcourt.

Although Gerald Henderson had only two points, he added nine rebounds, five assists, two blocks and one steal.

Brian Zoubek had eight rebounds in 11 minutes (he was limited by foul trouble)

Duke is 10-0 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge

So how good are the Panthers?

Carolina's 30-10 victory Sunday agianst Denver was impressive but it leads to some questions.

Can this team keep it going and run through the playoffs and go all the way to the Super Bowl?

There's a long way until that happens but certainly what the Panthers are doing is impressive. Consider the recent gauntlet of teams they've had to go through:

While Green Bay isn't a playoff team, Carolina rallied late to win up there in a game that was pivotal because it came after that Atlanta loss. So, after the Green Bay win, Carolina then beats Tampa Bay, a possible playoff team, in an emotional home Monday night game. And then the Panthers come back on a short week in what could have been a letdown game and after a slow start take it to Denver.

Now it's on to New York where home-field advantage in the playoffs will likely be determined. Can the Panthers keep this going? Or will this be a team that you sometimes see in sports that peaks late in the season only to collapse in the playoffs?

A few things about the Panthers.

A week after running over Tampa, you've got to like how Carolina passed the ball. Granted, Denver had some DBs out because of injuries, including Champ Bailey. Still, Delhomme was spot on with most of his passes. I can only think or one or two where he was way off. Steve Smith had 9 catches for 165 yards. Muhsin Muhammad added four catches for 70 yards. One concern is you'd really like to see a third receiver but with two solid running backs it doesn't matter as much.

One thing to think about is how the Panthers offensive line is coming together. The group of Jordan Gross, Travelle Wharton, Ryan Kalil, Keydrick Vincent and Jeff Otah had not played an entire game as a unit until the Atlanta contest a few weeks ago. They're still learning, in a way, what Williams and Stewart can do. Gross told me afterward that Williams' cutback run for a TD just shows the linemen that they need to keep with their blocks because Williams could be coming their way even if the play isn't designed that way.

Now, the unit didn't complete Sunday's game together. Vincent suffered a groin injury and did not return. Coach John Fox said that injury and the ankle injury to DT Maake Kemoeatu will be updated later in the week.

As for the defense, you have to credit the Panthers. After a slow start where they gave up points on Denver's first two possessions, they shut the Broncos out. Denver went 3-and-out on three of its five second-half possessions, a good sign for the playoffs. The secondary, which had had some problems lately, did a fair job and didn't get burned for a pass for more than 20 yards. Keep that going and a team isn't going to lose many games.

Needless to say, it will be interesting to see how the Panthers respond on the road next week at New York -- espeically how they had trouble early in the games at Atlanta and at Tampa earlier this season.

A few other notes:

Fox reported no other injuries after the game other than Vincent and Kemoeatu.

Denver LB Jamie Winborn on Carolina's runinning backs: "I have to give it to those guys. Those are some tough backs.''

Carolina lineman Jeff Otah on the game's importance: "This was a big game because usually when we win a big game, chances are we lose the next one, so we really had to focus on that.

Team owner Jerry Richardson, awaiting a heart transplant, attended the game.

John Fox on how things are going: "You learn more about your team every week. I've learned that we're pretty tough minded. We have to respond and get ready for New York. We'll enjoy this one and be back to work (Monday). ... As these games go forward, they get bigger on the outside but it's the same game between the lines. That is the approach we take and have taken.''

One funny thing. DL Charles Johnson should have had a pick in the first half but the pass bounced off his hands when he stepped in front of a Denver receiver while back in coverage. It's rare he goes into coverage -- he told me he does it about 3-4 times a game -- but it hurt not getting that pick.

"I'm always talking about I have the best hands on the D-line,'' Johnson said. "That's going to bite me in the tail. At halftime I was already hearing about it,'' he added with a smile.
