That might be as close as you'll get to a personalized Dale Jr. plate.

The N.C. DMV announced yesterday that it will be issuing NASCAR-themed license plates. Here is what they'll look like.

The drivers who will appear on N.C. plates reads like your starting grid for the typical Nextel Cup race. The Roush, Hendrick, Evernham, Childress, Penske South, Ganassi, Petty and Bill Davis drivers are all there. So's The King, Richard Petty.

So who's missing? Both of the DEI drivers, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Michael Waltrip, darn it. Give me a few minutes and I'll see if I can find out why.

2:40 p.m. update: Here are two things I heard from DMV:

I just got off the phone with the very helpful Andrew Sawyer in the Department of Transportation's public information office.

Here's what he said:
1. DMV had no say over which drivers will appear plates. The DMV got a list of drivers from NASCAR, wwhose licensing arm is working through a West Virginia company called Race Plate Marketing. I need to call NASCAR and figure out what's up with the missing DEI plates.

2. Contrary to what the AP story said, you can't order your Jeff Gordon plate online yet. (Check back in a couple of months.) Call DMV at 919-861-3575 to put in your order. It's first come, first serve. The first plates should hit the streets in about three weeks.

Interesting, I'm prety sure these things should sell pretty good. But a lot of disappointed Jr. fans I'm sure. It doesn't make sense to have a Bill Eliott, given that he won't be in the car for anymore than a few races here and there. One item I want to talk about is Mark Martin's Retro paint schemes. He will be running 4 of them this year. It's kinda neat that at the season finale in Homestead, he will race the same paint scheme he ran at the start of his Cup career. That's pretty cool. The other schemes are the Stohs Light, Folgers, and Valvoline. None of the sponsors will be on the car though, they'll still have Viagra on there. Darrell Waltrip did a similar thing during his retirement tour. Watch out for Mark in the Truck Series in '06.
