Silly season, Round 2
The latest name in the mix: Martin Truex Jr.
Thatracin.com reports today that Truex is being courted by Evernham and Yates, among others, for next season. He's a potential star -- Truex won the Busch series title last year and is in the hunt for this year's crown -- so I can't say I'm surprised that other teams are sniffing around.
Last I heard, he was going to get the No. 1 Chevy (Steve Park's old ride) in '06. That would shock the heck out of me if he bolted DEI.
Thoughts?

ThatsRacin must be struggling for survival if they have to make all this stuff up. IT'S TOO EARLY TO TALK ABOUT THIS STUFF! I honestly haven't been to their site since Jayski stopped being housed with them. They aren't worth anything.

Actually, it could be a test of whether Jr.(8) can handle another stud in the stable. Jr.(1) could give Little E a run for his money at several levels of fame. 'Twill be interesting.

Same here, I stopped looking at That's Racin and changed my Jayski bookmark.

Interesting point, blogbudsman. But DEI definitely needs another star other than Junior. As much as I like Michael Waltrip, he just doesn't have the talent or the consistency that Junior does and Truex might have.
re. thatsracin.com: As breathless as their reporting as been, I have to keep track of what's going on there because it's the big dog among NASCAR news sites. (It's the Charlotte Observer's home site, for one.) But even the site's editor (and one of its four bloggers) thinks it's way too early to be talking about Silly Season.

If they think that, then why do they run the stories? It's mindless chatter.

They (or we in the news biz) run the stories because we can. It fills space, for one. For another, it's news. Third, it's a scoop (if it turns out to be true), and reporters and editors love scoops.
In a journalistic sense, what was odd about all of this was that Jim Utter, thatsracin.com's staff writer, wrote both the Truex and Biffle pieces, yet his boss (I think Bob Henry is his boss) said it was too early to speculate on driver changes. That would be like me signing off on a Dustin Long assignment, then criticizing it after the fact. Ain't going to happen here.
