It's a wonder he's not dead
After defending champ Buddy Rice crashed at today's Indy 500 practice, the AP reports, "(car owner Bobby) Rahal said onboard computers indicated the car hit with a force of 75 Gs - although Rahal believed it was even harder than that."
75Gs?! That's got to be a misprint, right? There's no way the human body can withstand that. Or can it? If that's accurate, that's just amazing.
Rice, by the way, suffered a back bruise and a concussion. All praise the SAFER barrier.

John the substance of your post became outdated by Sam Hornish's crash yesterday. I only saw the replay while standing in line at Biscuitville, but it looked like his car was higher than the catch fence.
OK my even commenting on this means I acknowledge that there is "another" open wheel race on Memorial Day weekend besides the one at Stafford Springs. You remember that place with the "biggest race in the history of Spring".

Mark:
I was out of town this weekend and missed the Hornish crash. Thanks for the heads-up.
And this other Memorial Day weekend race of which you speak ... ? ;)

I believe the "other" open wheel race goes by "The Greatest Spectacle" in racing.
Since it starts earlier in the day than the race at Stafford Springs I suppose it is an adequate preliminary race.
