The grass is greener
Among the nation's newspapers, no one is blogging more (that I can tell, anyway) than the News & Record. At last count, we have 16. Of course, that might have changed since I started typing that sentence.
I was feeling pretty good when we launched this thing back in February, right before Daytona. And then my smugness went away when the neighbors over at thatsracin.com, the Knight-Ridder chain's well-established racing site, launched not one but four the week before The Spotter went live.
The site's editor, Bob Henry, has a pretty good blog. He doesn't post all that regularly, and he gets far fewer comments than the other three bloggers over there.
But when he had a couple of recent posts about DEI's firing of Pete Rondeau and about Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s and Michael Waltrip's struggles, his comment meter just about broke.
So in an effort to attract some more traffic around here, I'm going to try something from the Checkered Past playbook:
Dale Earnhardt Jr. stinks.
Michael Waltrip is worse.
DEI is doomed.
Okay, comment away. I want to see this thing hit double digits by morning.

Thank goodness DEI has Martin Truex, Jr. I think Martin, Sr. could still out-drive the current DEI Cup boys in equal equipment.
John, if you want the counter meter to spin out of control tell your friends Bruce and Jennifer that a demolition derby is being organized over at Bowman Gray Stadium for all of the School Board Members and their friends over in High Point.

What about a chain race, Mark? That has the potential for all sorts of mayhem.
And I agree with you about Truex. He hasn't exactly torn up the Cup series in his starts there, but he's run up front a few times. I'd love to see DEI run a third car for him in '06, assuming they keep Mikey around, which I hope they do. A boy can dream ...

I know it most likely won't happen, but Truex has been tossed around as a potential guy to get the 6 car. That would be the best career move he could make.

John, it just hit me that this post is all about 2 people who "stink" and have won 3 Daytona 500's between them.
The migration from one manufacturer to another is only permitted to go the other way, Ford is a stepping stone to GM, say Jeff Gordon for example.
Truex has been a Chevy guy his entire career. If my fellow NJ resident were to abandon the bowtie I would be left to do what?? pull for Stanton Barrett???
The one exception I make for the blue oval is Mark Martin, "now that's a racecar driver" as Harry Hoag said in Days of Thunder.

Mark: The post was less of a comment on DEI and supposed to be more of a comment on how people react to criticism of the two DEI drivers. For the record, I don't think the drivers of the No. 8 and No. 15 stink at all. I'm a big Junior fan, but he's just having a terrible year. It happens to most drivers now and then -- just look at four-time champ Jeff Gordon, who has slid to 11th in points. And Waltrip has two top fives, one more than E. Sadler (3rd in points) and the same as Rusty (7th) and Mayfield (12th). Things could be worse. Better, sure. But worse? Definitely.
I hope Truex sticks around the DEI camp, just not at the expense of Waltrip.
