How in the heck?

Nearly 24 hours later, I'm still stunned that Jeremy Mayfield won Sunday's race at Michigan. The guy had been doing laps all day, and next thing you know, he's winning. All I could tell from BP & crew is that it had something to do with gas mileage. (Which is comical. These cars get, what, 6 gallons to the mile or something?)

Of course, I didn't watch Sunday's race all that carefully. I saw the popped tires and the trash (oh, the trash -- where was the NBC graphic to show how the drivers get the hot dog wrappers off the grill at 190 mph?) and a long parade of green flag runs. Yeah, it was that boring of a race. (Diecast Dude probably summed it up best.)

But it was good for Mayfield. Last year, he squeezed into the Chase at the very last minute, and most folks figured he'd sink without a trace, which he promptly did. This year, the fact that he has one win, and it's not at Richmond, suggests he might make some noise in the Chase.

Meanwhile, the Scotsman has more on Sunday's race and Jeff Gordon, who is knocking on the door of the Chase but can't seem to get in, at least not yet.

Some blog gossip: Looks like Rantville got the boot over at thatsracin.com. Or maybe he booted himself. I have no idea. (Hmmm. That's not really gossip, is it? More of a news flash.)

Anyway, the Roush Racing of NASCAR blogging found someone else, and her blog is called The Infield. Go check it out. And, no, I don't know the answer to the question she asked about pizza.

I've got to hand it to That's Racin'. It must have taken some doing, and was almost undoubtedly one of the most exhaustive, exhausting searches on record; but they actually managed to find a blogger even dumber than the ones they already have. Will wonders never cease.

I actually thought the race was very good. You can't tell me those last 20 laps didn't have you on the edge of your seat.

John Newsom said:

Yeah, Matt, the last 20 laps were pretty good, especially when Tony Raines (!) was leading. My problem was that I had missed a big chunk of the race up till then, and I was having trouble figuring out who was where and what exactly was going on.

I probably would have liked it better had I seen it from the final pit stop. But that's just me.

DD, your post is one of the times I hate being a corporate blogger because I soooooo want to talk about that very topic.

As Diecast dude knows I have had a long "behind the scenes" relationship with those in charge over at the "other coporate blogs"

If you read Bob Henry's "fond farewell" to Rantville you will note tepid support at best. The Mayor's welcome wore mighty thin and sooner or later he had to go. The Mayor claims to have booted himself due to a lack of and loss of "fun" in blogging. But that "fun" was in direct proportion to Dale Jr sinking deeper into the points race.

As for Sunday's race it never ceases to amaze me how people can call a race boring when much of it was contested while cars were three abreast.

For those I always advise take a shot of Formula One racing, then come back to NASCAR.

I've got to agree with Marc , Michigan on Sunday was not boring, not sexy, but not boring.. fuel milage racing is sometimes a necessary evil.. but the on-track festivities more than made up for it.. and Mayfield won.. he's not my favorite racer, but he deserves respect.. he's achieved the feat of Chase-hood twice now.. and others with more headline potential haven't. So, give Mayfield some some props where deserved, sometimes the twentieth place car wins..and I would've been jumping out of my seat if Tony Raines would've pulled it off.. a new driver in a , for all practical purposes, part-time car...those headlines would've been fun to read..Roush / Hendrick /Stewart juggernaut beaten by some guy we've scarcely heard about, except for sharing seat time with Stewart at Harvick's 33. I'd still be grinning.

Marc: I missed Bob Henry's farewell (shows how often I venture over there). But it looks like Bob isn't really blogging much any more (he's turned it over to two other guys), and The Infield (the blog that replaced Rantville) introduced a second blogger this morning.

It's sort of like they're changing crew chiefs in mid-season over there.

Fuel mileage racea are good in small doses. Not like '03 when it happened for a month, but every once in a while to shake things up. The cars ducking on pit road, guys staying out to conserve, guys running out near the end, it's fun to watch... every once in a while.
