It doesn't get much sillier than this

In our ongoing coverage of Silly Season 2005, Dustin Long just got this from the folks over at Roush Racing:

ROUSH RACING ANNOUNCEMENT

CONCORD, N.C. (August 9, 2005) – Roush Racing announced today that Kurt Busch has advised team officials that he has signed with another team commencing in 2007. The name of the team is not known. Kurt also requested a release from his contract for 2006. Due to sponsor and team considerations no decision on that request will be made for an indefinite period. Roush Racing will have no further comment at this time.

Roush

(emphasis mine)

Dustin's on the case. He's thinking Busch is going to either Penske (Rusty's No. 2) or DEI, but he's just guessing at this point. We should have more in tomorrow's paper.

My first guess was the No. 2. That's about the only ride out there that's potentially better than what he has now.

Update: Busch going to Penske Racing South.

I nearly went into cardiac arrest when I read that. I guess I'll start looking for some Miller Lite merchandise now.

Don't worry, Matt. You might have a year and a half to save up.

Btw, what do you make of this move? More money? More prestige? I can't believe Ryan Newman is all that happy. And I'm not sure what Penske has that Roush doesn't (except perhaps more cash).

Matt said:

I wish I knew... the biggest thing I've heard is that Roush isn't paying him according to what he believes he is worth, and this Penske deal will make him the highest-paid driver. I guess also the opportunity to take Rusty's ride is big too.

Who cares about Roush or Kurt Bush. This is the least popular team and the least popular driver in all of NASCAR.Oh...I forgot Kurt is the current champion. I would have to question Penske's judgement on this one. Kurt is just an average driver who has been in great equipment. Let's see how he does without the Roush advantage in Rusty's ride. I doubt that Penske gets the factory support from Dodge that Roush gets from Ford. Not to mention that Kurt is a totally un-marketable geek. It is really obvious that his brother Kyle is much more popular and he has not even won a Cup race yet.

Matt said:

Kurt will win no matter what ride he is in because he is that damn good.

Matt said:

One more thing, since when is racing a popularity contest? I know you probably have only watched racing since the new TV deal, but if you were really a fan you would understand.

Your take on Busch's looks may or may not be accurate, dirtisbetter, but I suspect you're going to see a boatload of Kurt Busch in your favorite 7-11, Harris Teeter and neighborhood watering hole.

He may not get you to pick up a six of Miller Lite, but he should remind you that he's richer than you, not to mention a better driver. ...

... Okay, I'm back from being bitter.

One more thing: Busch is the closest thing among the Young Guns to be The Next Rusty Wallace. Every sport needs a Rusty Wallace.
