Shane Hmiel finishes 10th ...

... out of 10 in the Virginia-Carolina USAC Ford Focus Midget Series race Saturday night at South Boston (Va.) Speedway. (A little recent background is here.)

Before anyone goes into the Hmiel-should-never-race-NASCAR-again rant -- not that he doesn't deserve it, because he blew a big fat second chance this summer -- just think of this. Three months ago, Hmiel was racing at one of the best race tracks anywhere. Saturday night, he was on a very slow (race)track to Nowheresville in one of the warm-up events.

In other words, Hmiel has a better idea than any of us of how far he's fallen. Or he should, anyway.

John, when I click on the "best race tracks" link I get Lowes Motor Speedway; what track was I supposed to go to?

South Boston used to have Busch races that would run circles around anything at Lowes. Not to mention the best bologna burgers in the tri-state area.

Ha! The link works just fine, Mark. ;)

I probably should have said "most prestigious" or "best known" instead of best. But you get my point.

Speaking of short tracks, you've got all the modified races on your radar for Labor Day Weekend, right? Martinsville on Saturday night and two at Ace on Monday ...

John, a little worried about some of those "goons" from Bowman Gray Stadium showing up at Martinsville and messing up what should be a good weekend.

I certainly hope that the driver injured gets to return to a normal life. I can't remember if it was the N&R that did an expanded story on this or if it was the HPE.

Don't worry, I closely follow Modseriesscene.com for all the news I need on NASCAR's original series.

However the best race of Labor Day weekend is probably the ARCA dirt race on the 1 mile track on Monday. I haven't checked on Speed.com, I don't think this race is televised. Schaeder is normally in this race and Stewart has been it recently as well. I think they will have to catch the red eye from Fontana if they are doing it this year.

Mark: The fight involved drivers in the Sportsman division, not the modified division, so I think your Yankee drivers will be safe.
