We're No. 3

Carrie slapped a comment last night on this post from last week, and it got me to thinking, always a dangerous thing.

What would I get if I googled nascar+blog?

You'd get this list. The Dude and The Scotsman are running 1-2, according to one method of tracking activity, and I'm just trying to keep up with their draft. (No, I'm not Jimmie Johnson in this scenario.)

The same search turned up some other promising racin' blogs:

Track Talk: Written by Chris Stout, the sports anchor for the NBC affiliate in the Triangle. He's picking Ryan Newman to win the chase. Sadly, no comments and no permalinks.

Dustin Marson: A blog from a computer graphics designer from of all places Minneapolis, the one big city where there are no NASCAR track-building rumors.

Race Driven: From a Massachusetts guy who sprinkles some NASCAR amid other topics, not all of them racin'.

Chicksview: The pinkest racin' blog ever. The Race Chick says she lives in NC (a plus), works in NASCAR (an insider?) and from her blogroll appears to be a Junior fan. So I can forgive the pink.

NASCAR Napper: Another Minnesota guy, a Mark Martin fan whose idea of a good Sunday is snoozing on the couch and waking up in time to catch the last 20 laps of the race.

So there you go. Give 'em a read, and report back. AOL bloggers, try to resist the urge to sign 'em all up.

Dang, I need to be more careful next time. Getting you thinking is just begging for trouble! ;-)

I think the only way someone can find me is if they search for NASCAR blogs, then narrow it down by Robby Gordon, the IndyCar series & Dan Wheldon. Even then I'm stuck on the third page! *sigh*

I know how you feel, Carrie. I'd google myself during my reporting days, and the only thing that hit page 1 was something I wrote back in 1998 that had long been pulled from our site.

I think the trick is in the linking and the writing pretty much every day.

It wasn't until I started this thing that google paid attention. That, and my suggestion that Robby Gordon would be the perfect driver for the No. 07 Google Chevy. ;)

Ha! I've tried googling myself by name. Not too fruitful since I share a first name with a soap character that almost married another character with my last name. I actually watched that soap when all that was going on and let me tell you, very weird.

What's this about a Google Chevy? Is this Robby's sponsor that is taking FOTL's spot? If you're just goofing, don't toy with my emotions like that! Seriously, my dream replacement for FOTL would be Red Bull. It gives you (and your helmet) wings!!

John, you might want to forward that search engine result to Matt Crossman over at the Sporting News, he who when asked on AOL's 'Sports Blogggers Live' show about NASCAR bloggers replied he couldn't find any...

My only worry now is that whenever someone does a search for "cracked genius" my name will start appearing.

Thanks for the shout out John. Interesting point about Minneapolis. Minnesota has a lot of racing fans but no real interest in forking over any dough for it. We pretty much have to just drive out to Chicago, Kansas, or Michigan to catch a race.

I can't imagine Minnesota ever considering constructing a major NASCAR speedway. We can barely keep our NHRA dragstrip open (it's up for sale on a yearly basis), our football team is terrible, we've been fighting over building a new baseball stadium for over a decade. I guess Minnesota will always be known only as "the state of hockey."

However I must mention that there are some extremely talented racer car drivers out at the small Minnesota dirt tracks. Elko Speedway south of Minneapolis is always exciting and I'm always impressed by the racing. Unfortunately, many of these drivers are too far away geographically to ever get noticed by a major racing series.

Thanks again.

Personally I think you should be #1, the first two are so one sided and you are not. I respect your writings

Dustin: Thanks for stopping by. I'm glad you can keep the NASCAR flag flying up there.

And don't get too down on M-polis. It's a great town (based on my one visit there on a warm day in September), and you've got all four sports. Here in Gso, we have the NFL and NBA 90 miles away in Charlotte, the NHL in Raleigh (90 minutes in the other direction) and great appreciation that we have cable TV and reliable electricity.

Yeah, okay, we do have Martinsville and Lowe's nearby, so I guess it's a tradeoff.

Can you give us a scouting report on any good drivers up there we'll be seeing in Busch or Cup anytime soon? I hope Matt Kenseth hasn't sucked up all of the racin' talent along the border states.

Toni: That's really nice, thanks. Though I don't mind being No. 3. It's a great number, much better than 1 (Steve Park) or 2 (Rusty Wallace). ;)
